Jacob Reviews…Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes and Watson team-up again to stop Professor Moriarty. Photo property of Warner Bros, Village Roadshow and Silver Pictures.

Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows showcases one of the oldest rivalries in all of literature: Sherlock Holmes and his arch-nemesis: Professor James Moriarty.

Throughout this Guy Richie film, Sherlock Holmes (once again played by the unforgettable Robert Downey, Jr.) and his partner, Dr. Watson (Jude Law) must outwit Moriarty (played brilliantly by Jared Harris) before he ignites a world war.

This author thoroughly enjoyed this film due to its’ screenplay, acting, and the film’s score.     Congratulations to Kieran and Michele Mulroney for writing and executing the film’s screenplay.  From the intense opening sequence to the final battle between the arch-foes in Switzerland, the Mulroneys delivered a film full of humor, action and romance.

Another terrific thing that helps Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows stand out is the acting.   Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law showed incredible chemistry as the legendary team of Holmes and Watson.  In addition, both men were able to stand out separately from Downey, Jr.’s arrogant take on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character to Law’s straight man portrayal of Watson.    Besides the duo, Jared Harris perfectly portrays the arch-villain by showing off the character’s sadistically and calculating personality.

Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows features a superb score from Hans Zimmer (the Christopher Nolan Batmans, Pirates of the Caribbean franchise).  Zimmer scored an incredible soundtrack that successfully took the film audience back to Victorian England and perfectly weaved suspense and emotion into the film.

Final thoughts and grade: One of the best action movies of 2011! It was a great escape from reality and this author hopes that we have not seen the last of Sherlock Holmes.  A-
