A crowd of music lovers, fans, and industry insiders packed into the Soho House New York City for an intimate performance from rising R&B singer-songwriter Samm Henshaw.  Since he released his 2015 debut extended play, The Sound Experiment, Samm Henshaw has built a significant following on social media. He supported James Bay, Tori Kelly, and Chance the Rapper when they went on tour. In addition, his music videos have been cumulatively viewed over 20 million times.

This intimate evening marked Samm Henshaw’s first time performing in the Big Apple. From the time that Samm performed his hit single, “These Hands,” to his set’s conclusion with “Broke,” he engaged with his audience throughout the performance. As soon as he sang the first few notes of “These Hands,” Samm tugged at the audience’s heartstrings with his outstanding vocals.

There were several highlights from Samm Henshaw’s Big Apple debut. The singer-songwriter brought out his 2016 single, “Night Calls,” from the vault.  He also jokingly stated that it was also the first time in two years that he picked up a guitar. During his performance, Samm Henshaw showcased his beautiful falsetto, which caused the room to roar with delight.

One song that the audience demanded that Samm Henshaw perform was “Church.” In the track’s music video and recording a horn section and a gospel choir accompany him.  Since it was a stripped down performance, he asked the audience to sing out the song’s catchy chorus: “Wake Up and get yourself to church—-Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!”

Final thoughts and grade: Despite having a cold, he delivered an outstanding set that showcased that he is one artist that music lovers need to watch.  With hits such as “These Hands,” “Church,” and “Broke,” Samm has the potential to be an influential R&B artist for his generation. A
