Since his debut in 2005, rapper Kosha Dillz has continued to charm music fans with his superb freestyle skills, ability to rap in three different languages: English, Spanish and Hebrew and his creative music videos and amazing studio albums
He has worked with a diverse variety of artists including Matisyahu, Snoop Dogg, Cage the Elephant and Aesop Rock. Kosha has also performed at numerous high-profile venues including Giants Stadium, Sundance and South By Southwest plus his music was featured on VH1 and in last year’s Bud Light’s “Here We Go” Super Bowl commercial.
I had the chance to correspond with the rising rapper and we talked about how he got into music, how he stands out in the crowded world of hip-hop music and his latest project.
Jacob Elyachar: What do you like about performing?
Kosha Dillz: I like the act of being in front of lots of people. There is a special feeling of sweat that comes off you on stage. A performance is special with music. It is very different from sports.
JE: What drew you into the world of hip-hop?
KD: I think my friends. I always had trouble speaking up for myself when I was younger, so I followed what everyone else did. I liked the music though. We used to smoke weed and listen to the Wu-Tang Clan. We also used to go to parties and listen to rappers like Redman and Method Man. We listened to underground hip-hop with my boy, Yak Ballz, who was really popular in New York City at the time.
JE: There are a lot of rappers in the music industry. How do you stand out compared to the other MCs in the industry?
KD: I do not think there is anyone capable of doing what I do. You can research the accomplishments I have done in the past five years and all are in completely different categories. I have played the most elite hip-hop events for my diversity, and also created my own lane with my culture and heritage intertwined into a new realm of acceptance in the hip-hop community. Being a pioneer is challenging, more so than being a great ball player of an already established game. I am also developing new ways to earn income in a stale “tour only” community.
JE: Right now, you are currently raising funds for your first film: “Kosha Dillz is Everywhere: The Hustle to Happiness.” Why did you decide that you wanted to make this film?
KD: I think it is necessary to shed light on the things I have done and accomplished not only as an artist, but also as a human being. There are degrees of happiness in this game and I think people get stuck in the middle somewhere. Of course, there are really entertaining stories along the way.
JE: How has social media influenced your career?
KD: I think social media lets people into your life and your current thoughts. I say a lot of things I think about and I also retweet a lot of things too in relation to topics I care about.
