The rising star has made an impact on television this decade. Some of his filmography ranges from Further Adventures in Babysitting and Legends of The Hidden Temple to voicing characters in Ferdinand and Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie. Currently, Jet plays Boyd on FOX’s Last Comic Standing and voices Pip the Penguin on the Disney Junior cartoon series: T.O.T.S.
Jet Jurgensmeyer has developed a following in the music world. He released his self-titled album that includes songs such as “Everything Will Be Alright,” “Real World,” and “Parachute.” He also covers a plethora of songs on his YouTube channel that range from Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s “10,000 Hours” to Linkin’ Park’s “One More Light.”
In this edition of A Conversation, Jet opened up about overcoming the obstacles young actors face in their career, revealed the recording process for his self-titled album, and said why Ed Sheeran would be a dream collaborator.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in performing? How did that passion evolve into the desire to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: I started getting on stage when I was three at my parent’s club/restaurant they owned in Nashville, Tennessee. I have always loved it. I remember how much fun it was to see the people smile when I was singing or laughing at my jokes. I knew then that this is what I wanted to do.
Jacob Elyachar: On January 2, 2020, FOX will air the eighth season premiere of Last Man Standing. What are some of the highlights from your time on the set? What can fans expect from your character, Boyd, as the show returns?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: I have not been on much so far this season. I think there will be quite a bit of development with my character and possibly a new addition to my TV family.
Jacob Elyachar: What have been some of the challenges that you faced throughout your career? How have you overcome those obstacles?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: I do not think people realize how hard it can be for kids in the industry. You work, and you have to keep up with school. My parents are pretty strict about my schooling and keeping up with things. You have to do three hours of school on set each day along with your work. Some days when you have a hard subject with your school, you have to put in a lot of time on the weekends. I am sure most kids that go to a regular school have the same thing to deal with, but I think sometimes people might think if you are an actor, you don’t have the same things to stress over as other kids do.
Jacob Elyachar: Earlier this year, you released your first self-titled studio album. Could you please describe the recording process to my readers?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: My producer, Butch Baker, my parents, and I would listen to a bunch of songs to try to find the right age-appropriate songs for me. I was also trying to write for the album (I have one that I co-wrote on the record with my friend Alivia McKenna called “Say Goodbye”). We narrowed down the songs and then went into the studio in Nashville with one of the best engineers and some of the most amazing musicians and recorded the songs. We would then live with the tracks for a couple of weeks so I would get comfortable with them and then go back in to record the vocals. After that, we would add background vocals and mix the tracks. It was a lot of fun to be involved in the entire process from start to finish.
Jacob Elyachar: If you had the opportunity to collaborate with any singers, songwriters, and producers, who would be on the top of your list? How would they enhance your sound?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: Ed Sheeran would be amazing to work with. I think he is so creative, and I could learn so much from him. I believe that working with more experienced people can help you develop more as an artist yourself. I think someone with as much experience and talent as Ed Sheeran would help me be able to express my creative/artist side more.
Jacob Elyachar: What are some of the projects that my readers should look forward to from you in 2020?
Jet Jurgensmeyer: Hopefully, more Last Man Standing. That show is just a blast to be involved with. My Disney Junior animated show T.O.T.S. will air its second season, and we are all excited about that. I will have more new music that I am passionate about. I will also be touring some more around the country. It’s always a lot of fun to get to go out and perform and visit with people.
