Siblings Alec and Becca King are the latest artists to sit down for A Conversation.
Together, they are This Boy That Girl, one of the hottest up-and-coming acts that is seeking to scorch the music charts.
After releasing their debut EP: Breaking Bad in March, their music video for their breakout single, “Turn the Night Down,” has been viewed over 164,000 times on YouTube and is currently in rotation with Zac Brown Band, Jessie J and the Pitch Perfect 2 Soundtrack as a part of Cinema Sounds’ pre-show feature.
Alec and Becca also opened for Aaron Carter’s “Wonderful World” tour and Kalin and Myles’ “Chase Dreams” tour and headlined sold-out shows in their hometown of Los Angeles. Next week, the duo will perform at the iconic Viper Room and will perform at the San Diego County Fair on June 24.
In this edition of A Conversation, the duo talked about overcoming challenges that they have faced breaking into the recording industry and whom they would like to collaborate with in the future.
Jacob Elyachar: Could you share your origin story with my readers?
Becca King: Both my brother and I have always been interested since we were very young. However, we started in separate directions. I started toying in the singer-songwriter genre and played the guitar, Alec started rapping and fell in love with producing. Eventually, he started to rap over my songs and after hearing the finished product; we decided to create our duo.
JE: Who are your musical heroes?
Alec King: Because Becca and I are two completely different artists; we have completely opposite musical heroes! I admire Ed Sheeran, Good Charlotte and Eminem. Each of them are uniquely different artists, but they have made their respective marks in the music industry.
BK (to Alec): Those are some great choices, Alec! I have to say that I admire Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry.
JE: Let’s talk about your EP: “Breaking Bad.” How long did it take the group to create the EP from conception to release?
AK: Recording our very first EP was an awesome experience from start-to-finish! We recorded a lot of songs for the record and Becca and I had to make a couple of difficult decisions to make regarding which songs made the EP. Despite the difficult cuts, we were able to select several tracks and it turned out to be a crazy rad EP!

JE: What were some of the challenges that you faced in the early stages of your career? How did you overcome them?
BK: Since we are a siblings-based band, a lot of the problems that we go through are family based. But in the end, we still have a tight relationship and we have each other’s back.
AK: I would also describe our relationship is love-hate and just as Becca said, we are family and we always stick together!
JE: On June 8, This Boy That Girl will be performing at one of Los Angeles’ most prestigious music halls: The Viper Room.
AK: This will be our first time performing at the Viper Room. We have performed at the Troubadour and bunch of other LA venues, but we have a feeling that this will be a huge concert for us!
JE: I also want to thank you for letting me break some exclusive news. This Boy That Girl will performing at the San Diego State Fair and share the bill with both Fifth Harmony and Austin Mahone. What can your fans expect from those performances?
AK: Becca and I have a long set! For our fans that have seen us before, we will be performing brand new material. We are also going to have our brother, Matt Ryan King, join us on stage as well!
JE: Who are some of your dream collaborators?
AK: I would like to work with Jon Bellion and Kanye West.
BK: It would be a dream come true to work with Taylor Swift!
AK: Taylor Swift would be a dream relationship collaboration!
BK: Ed Sheeran is an incredible writer and I would love to write a song with him.
JE: How has social media helped This Boy That Girl establish a place in the music industry?
BK: We have noticed that a majority of our fans have created tight-knit relationships on social media!
AK: They became close with each other due to their interactions on our social media pages. Interacting with them on social media is the best way to inform them about our shows and our other activities. It is so cool to see their posts on social media and knowing whom they are bringing to our events!
JE: If you had the chance to meet with aspiring musicians who want to have a career in the recording industry, what advice would you share with them?
BK: The most important advice I would share with them is to remember why they started. We always have to remember that we love music and go back to our love of music, no matter what’s going on.
AK: I would also add that you should continue to make new music and do not quit!
