Warning! Spoilers to follow!
One of the greatest comic book characters of all-time has been murdered.
Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, has killed his mentor and father figure: Professor Charles Francis Xavier, mutant rights activist and founder of the X-Men, in battle.
Since his creation in the early 1960s, Professor Xavier has been instrumental force of good throughout the Marvel Universe as he took in mutants who were feared and hated by society and taught them how to peacefully co-exist with the human race through his school: the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.
While the school’s leadership and names have changed hands multiple times in the past decades, the school’s mission remained the same what Charles Xavier taught earlier generations: use their powers for good and to defend humans and mutants alike against extremist humans and mutants, who sought to either wipe out the Mutant race or enslave humanity respectively.
Some students such as Beast, Wolverine and Storm have graduated to represent mutantkind on the world stage as either becoming members of prestigious organizations such as the Avengers or the Fantastic Four, while others including Havok, Polaris and Rachel Grey have worked with different alien races to improve intergalactic relations.
Throughout his lifetime, Xavier has experienced strife such as losing loved ones and students in the battlefield and has had the misfortune of creating some of the most diabolical figures known to the Marvel Universe including former tyrannical Sh’Iar emperor Vulcan and the creature known as Onslaught. In addition, he has been tortured by multiple super villains and even by his own students.
Despite the hardships that Professor Xavier has faced in his lifetime, he was an inspirational figure to multiple generations of students, allies, multiple alien races and even the occasional opponent. His parents Brian and Sharon Xavier, longtime girlfriends Dr. Moira MacTaggert and former Sh’Iar Empress Lilandra Neramani and students Thunderbird, Jean Grey, Banshee and Nightcrawler preceded Charles in death.
Survivors include Xavier’s son: David Charles Haller, step-brother Cain Marko and countless students including Dr. Henry McCoy, Robert Drake, Alex Summers, Lorna Dane, James “Logan” Howlett, Ororo Munroe, Katherine “Kitty” Pryde and Rogue.
Funeral services are to be determined after the Avengers and X-Men’s victory over the Phoenix Force.
