In three days, the American Idol Top 40 will take the stage in Las Vegas to prove to the judges: Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj that they belong in Idol’s Top 10.
While the contestants will still be separated by gender, the Las Vegas shows will bring out the contenders and eliminated the pretenders.
Today’s article focuses on the five female candidates that I strongly believe will move on to the final rounds of the competition and reclaim the Idol crown but also one Wild Card contestant that could shake things up in the coming weeks.
Candice Glover
While she wrongly cut last year in Las Vegas, Candice Glover has been blazing a comeback that started with her Charlotte audition that earned a standing ovation from both Randy and Mariah and accumulated with strong Hollywood performances including “Impossible” and “Girl on Fire.” I will lose all of my remaining faith in Idol, if Candice is not in this year’s Top 10.
Janelle Arthur
The Oliver Springs, Tennessee native (and three-time Idol auditionee) is one of the strongest country singers this competition has seen since Carrie Underwood. Janelle continued to deliver warm and impressive covers of country hits since her audition in Charlotte and hit a high note when she tackled Carrie Underwood’s “I Told You So.” Hopefully, she will continue to make the right song selections and make it to the Live Shows.

Angela Miller
Before Hollywood Week, I would have placed New York auditionee Angela Miller in the back of the pack. However, Angela blossomed during Hollywood Week as she delivered her cover of Jessie J’s “Who You Are” during the a cappella round and her haunting original that she sang during the last round of Hollywood Week. In order to survive the Sudden Death Round, Angela needs to deliver an amazing performance that catapults her into the Top 10.
Shubha Vedula
Despite Randy and Keith butchering her name in Long Beach, Shubha delivered an astonishing cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” that earned her a ticket to Hollywood Week. Shubha continued to deliver sultry performances including her cover of Mariah and Whitney’s duet “When You Believe” that made the Grammy Winner and Idol judge proud. In order to get to the Live Shows, Shubha needs to continue picking songs that show off her incredible voice.
Rachel Hale
One of the perkiest contestants that we have seen in years has continued to amuse both the viewers and the judges in the Hollywood Rounds. However, she was almost cut from the Top 20 until the judges saved her from elimination. Despite the last-minute save, she could still be in the bottom of the judges’ list. In order to get back in the running, Rachel needs to deliver an unbelievable performance during the Sudden Death Round.
Zoanette Johnson
Zoanette is probably one of the most polarizing contestants that has ever graced the Idol stage in the post-Cowell and Abdul world. But Zoanette has improved so much since her original audition in Oklahoma City and entertained everyone during the finale of Hollywood Week and has earned my Wild Card vote. In order to be a true contender, Zoanette needs to channel her energy to the right song that will blow everyone away.
