Before I go into my Voice finale recap, I want to make a quick editorial comment.
There have been multiple fans (and some of my fellow colleagues) commenting that Adam Levine was rude to his finalist Will Champlin throughout his finale performance.
SHAME ON YOU FOR SHOWING FAVORITES! As a coach, you should be supportive of both of your students NOT THROWING THEM UNDER THE BUS! You lost respect from many fans by disrespecting Will and his family on one of the most important nights in a performer’s life.
Because of your rudeness to Will, I will not be supporting your team next season and I will be cheering on Team(s) Usher and Shakira.
Now enough with my diatribe out-of-the-way, let’s get down to business!
After weeks of Blind Auditions, Battle and Knockout Rounds and the Twitter Instant Save, we are down to our final three artists: Will, Tessanne Chin and Jacquie Lee!
Before Carson Daly got to the crucial results, fans received a bundle of performances from fan-favorites and international recording superstars!
The Final 20 kicked off the massive night of performances with “Tonight is the Night.” While it was great to see and hear all of the contestants’ voices, I wish they gave a solo to Matthew and Cole than Nic and James. In addition, I thought that the Pepsi commercial featuring MJ, Ray Charles, Britney and Mariah would be playing in the background! (Even though, it would be have been interesting to see Xtina’s reactions if Britney and Mariah’s faces popped up on the screen)
After checking in with the coaches, Jacquie Lee recruited Matthew Schuler, Caroline Pennell, Cole Vosbury and James Wolpert to perform Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I am glad that she brought together members from all four teams and show unity between all of the contestants. Cole slayed Brian May’s solo and it was great to see Matthew and Caroline back in action!
Tessanne was in tears when she learned that she would be singing with her personal hero: Celine Dion! The powerhouse divas teamed up to perform “Love Can Move Mountains!” Their voices perfectly blended together and I had a huge smile on my face! This was the best superstar duet in the show’s history!
OneRepublic returned to The Voice stage to debut a new single: “I Lived.” This was a perfect song that related everyone. While Ryan’s vocals were a little squeaky, they provided great energy for the show! Some of the greatest (and infamous) guys of the season: Matthew, Nic, Preston Pohl, Josh Logan and Ray Boudreaux teamed up to tackle Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.”
Will brought back four unique contestants (Caroline, Cole, Jonny Lang and Austin Jenckles) to tackle Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel.” This group performance was probably one of the best numbers of the night. Their harmonies were in sync and it gave me chills. Bravo!
One of the most unique parings of the night was Paramore and Jacquie Lee. I was worried that she was not going to hold her own against Hayley Williams and the guys. But it was interesting to have them add a gospel choir to the performance and it was great to see Jacquie shine and Hayley have a great time on stage.
The women of The Voice: Season Five came together to tackle Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Grey finally proved herself worthy as a Voice artist and it was great to see Kat Robichaud, Shelbie Z and Stephanie Anne Johnson on the stage! As the ladies exited the stage, the Final Three received a surprise from the Grinch and Carson, who gave them a car from Kia!
After Celine and Ne-Yo premiered their new duet, “Incredible,” it was time for Will to do his celebrity duet. The show paired him with Aloe Blacc to perform his collaboration with an acoustic version of his hit with Avicii-“Wake Me Up.” It was an interesting combination but it was great to hear the lyrics without the EDM background music distracting me.
The final group number of the night belonged to Tessanne. She brought several powerhouses with her: James, Preston, Grey and Olivia Henken to tackle Sam and Dave’s “Hold On! I’m Comin’.” These powerhouses definitely blew out Idol’s Groove Sauce’s version out of the water! I loved the jazzy arrangement and everyone’s solos!
Lady Gaga concluded the guest performances with a disco inspired “Do What U Want.” But the biggest surprise of the night was Gaga’s duet partner…Christina Aguilera! That was an impeccable performance and I hope that they release this collaboration SOON!
Now finally…here are the results:
3rd place….Will Champlin
And the winner of “The Voice: Season Five” is…..Team Adam’s Tessanne Chin!!
Congrats to Tessanne Chin and best of luck to Will and Jacquie!
Next season, Usher and Shakira return as “The Voice” coaches alongside Adam and Blake!
