It is hard to believe that a year has passed since I first interviewed magician Dustin Tavella for my podcast. When I first saw Dustin, I knew that he had superstar magnetism, and I was so excited when he won America’s Got Talent (AGT): Season 16! Tonight, Dustin Tavella returned to provide the entertainment as the tension filled the Pasadena Civic Center.
Last night, 11 qualifiers took the stage and competed for two spots in the Season 17 finale. Several acts received the dreaded buzzer from multiple judges, and others soared and cemented their places as frontrunners. Only two acts were sent to the AGT: Season 17 finale. Who did America select? Which acts were one step closer to inheriting Dustin’s crown? Read on to find out!
After recapping last night’s performances, including behind-the-scenes footage, all 11 acts took the stage, and Terry Crews introduced the judges. Simon apologized to the dancers, and Heidi drove everyone crazy by singing “Parmesan.” This season, Terry will reveal who made it to the Top Five and then share who was voted through by America.
Amoukanama cemented the first spot in this week’s final five. The Players’ Choir earned the second spot, and fan-favorite Avery Dixon grabbed the third spot. Comedian Don MacMillan received the fourth spot (which seemed to shock Simon), and to no one’s surprise, country music superstar Drake Milligan secured the last place.
As the Top Five waited backstage, Dustin Tavella returned to AGT. Sofia Vergara joined the Season 16 champion on stage and reunited her with her Modern Family co-star and Peacock’s Love Island host Sarah Hyland. Dustin asked Sarah to name a color: “red,” and he sprayed “magic” on the whiteboard. Dustin brought out his family, who spilled popsicle sticks onto the stage. Sofia picked up the popsicle sticks and asked Sarah to step onto a riser. The actress revealed that she had read the word “dream,” which was one of Sofia’s popsicle sticks! Dustin Tavella has grown as a performer since he won the show.
After playing AGT Password (which Simon and Howie won), it was time to get to business. This week’s top five returned to the stage. Terry revealed that Avery Dixon, Don MacMillian (which surprised me), and Drake Milligan were the first Season 17 Top Three.

Next week, a new set of contenders perform for America’s votes!
