The 2013 MTV Movie Awards kicked off with a bang as host Rebel Wilson reunited with the Pitch Perfect crew to perform a medley of their signature songs from the hit film.
For her opening monologue, the Australian comedienne targeted North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and gingers. After the Bridesmaids breakout star left the stage, her former co-star, Melissa McCartney, arrived to present the Best Male performance to Silver Linings Playbook’s Bradley Cooper.
SNL superstar alums and Grown-Ups 2 co-stars Adam Sandler and Chris Rock delivered the Best WTF Moment. But before they awarded it to Django Unchained’s Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson, the two comedians surprised the crowd with a rude and crude showdown that shocked the crowd.
After watching a preview of Star Trek Into Darkness, the audience gave a roaring welcome to the film’s three leads: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. The trio presented the Best Fight award to Marvel’s the Avengers for their battle against Loki in the 2012 summer blockbuster.
Three of Emma Watson’s previous co-stars: Eddie Redmayne, Logan Lerman and Jonah Hill (in a pre-recorded message) banded together to present her the Trailblazer Award. Emma Watson’s speech about being smart and quirky at school showcased why audiences loved her for 13 years.
Peter Dinklage paid tribute to his former Elf co-star praising him for his comedic genius and warts (farting the alphabet, ordering in Chinese and flushing the toilet). After a package that showcased the best moments in his illustrious film career from Elf and Zoolander to Blades of Glory and Stepbrothers), Ferrell appeared in a suit made out of $20 bills.
Fast & Furious 6 stars Paul Walker and Vin Diesel reminisced about their first time at the MTV Movie Awards before they joined Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez in presenting MTV Movie Awards host Rebel Wilson with the Breakthrough Performance Award. Afterwards, the awkward trio of Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and Zac Efron entertained the crowd with a “Best Bottomless” competition before handing Taylor Lautner (in a fat suit) the first Best Shirtless Award.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finally had his day as he was rewarded the Best Villain Award. The English actor thanked his Avengers castmates, Joss Whedon and Marvel for his involvement in the production. Before he left the stage, he thanked One Direction’s Liam Payne for naming is dog after his villainous counterpart.
After Selena Gomez delivered a Bollywood-inspired “Come and Get It,” Kerry Washington honored her longtime Silver Screen husband, Jamie Foxx, with the Generation Award. The Oscar Winner paid tribute to his family, professional team and colleagues during his acceptance speech.
The night ended with sneak peaks from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and World War Z.
Final thoughts and grade: Rebel Wilson’s hosting style was interesting as she perfectly balanced funny and obscured, while the show needed some more musical moments from several of the nominees. Overall, it dragged and at times, the 2013 MTV Movie Awards’ audience lost some of its attention span. C+
