One of the most anticipated albums of 2011 dropped on Monday, October 24, 2011. Coldplay released their fifth studio album: Mylo Xyloto. While this author was not originally a Coldplay fan, this British alternative rock band has won me over completely with their intriguing and fantastic new album.
This blog post will provide you with five songs that listeners would enjoy rocking out to no matter if you are studying for the Business Law exam or speed walking on the treadmill at your local gym.
Every Teardrop is A Waterfall
A week after Coldplay released this song as their first single on June 3, 2011, “Every Teardrop is A Waterfall” landed on the both Billboard Rock Songs (at number 21) and Alternative Songs (at number 23) airplay charts.* Coldplay made a terrific decision to use this song as their first single because “Every Teardrop” contains catchy lyrics, excellent usage of their instruments and awesome guitar riffs.
Bottom Line and Grade: This song is a great song to start your day or for end-of-the-day reflection. 4.5/5 A-
Paradise
Between the song’s incredible arrangement and lyrics, “Paradise” is pure Coldplay brilliance and this song could have been incorporated with Arwen’s theme from the Lord of the Rings trilogy because of her relationship with Aragon.
Bottom Line and Grade: If this song does not get nominated for a Grammy there is no justice in the entertainment industry. 5/5 A+
Princess in China
The tenth track on Mylo Xyloto-“Princess of China” is dedicated to the British Alternative Rock’s collaboration with Rihanna. When Coldplay fans listen to this song, some might think that this was a Ryan Tedder track because of the overlapping piano that was featured on the track. One of the highlights of the track is Rihanna’s vocals. The Barbados Beauty shined during this collaboration and helped Coldplay deliver a solid performance.
Bottom Line and Grade: While Rihanna shined on this song, I thought she over sung during the brief duet between her and Coldplay’s front man Chris Martin. Due to that small tiny problem I had to take a point off. 4/5 B-
Charlie Brown
While the song may be called “Charlie Brown,” there is no accompanying “Linus and Lucy” score. Despite the misleading song title, this song shows off Coldplay’s incredible musicianship. This song could definitely inspire future jam sessions for bands worldwide.
Bottom Line and Grade: This song could be used to mediate or reflect! Awesome song 5/5 A+
Hurts Like Heaven
After starting out with a very quick (like blink and you miss it) xylophone opening, the song continues going 60 miles-per-hour and shows no point of slowing down. Like “Charlie Brown,” “Hurts Like Heaven” takes the opportunity to highlight Coldplay’s impeccable sound from the awesome guitar solo in the middle of the song to the overlapping piano and drums near the end of the song.
Bottom Line and Grade: With catchy lyrics and a display of incredible musicality, “Hurts Like Heaven” is a truly awesome song. 5/5 A+
Final Thoughts and Overall Grade: Mylo Xyloto is Coldplay’s best album yet. With incredible instrumental hooks, catchy lyrics and fantastic arrangements, this British Alternative Rock Band has now solidified itself as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. 23.5/25 A
