Jacob Reviews…..Rock of Ages-The Musical

During my latest trip to New York City, I decided to see Rock of Ages.  It was one of the best decisions that I made that weekend.  This rock-jukebox musical focused on a love story that was intertwined the best hair metal songs of the 1980s.  When the show  premiered on Broadway in 2009, American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis portrayed aspiring rocker Drew Boley, the show’s hero and Reefer Madness actress Amy Spanger originated the role of heroine Sherrie Christian.

Like most Broadway shows, both Maroulis and Spangler have left the show to pursue other career opportunities but do not worry Rock of Ages audience members   there are a new Drew and Sherrie in the forms of Dan Domenech and Rebecca Faulkenberry.  Both actors were phenomenal in their respective roles, had incredible chemistry and were amazing singers.

However this was not The Drew and Sherrie Show, this musical had an incredible ensemble of talented performers.  The standouts include original cast member Mitchell Jarvis, who portrays Lonny, the show’s eccentric narrator provided comedy to the show and also broke the fourth wall numerous times with his sarcastic comments.   Another performer that stood out was Josephine Rose Roberts, who portrays Regina, the former secretary turned radical activist.  Roberts was impeccable for delivering heart into 80s classics including “We’re Not Going to Take It” and “We Built this City.”   Original cast member Michele Mais also stood out as strip club owner Justice because of her vocals and sultriness.

One of the best things that came out of Rock of Ages was the on-stage live band that accompanied the ensemble throughout the show.  These incredible musicians helped the cast tear through the show.   I was impressed with the band’s versatility towards playing some of the best 1980s classics including Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” to Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock.”

Final Thoughts and Grade: Overall this show is a crowd pleaser and if you attend you might find audience members lip sync with the performers and getting up to dance.  Great show!  A+
