Since her debut on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, Susan Boyle has evolved from Internet Sensation to Worldwide Superstar. Boyle has put out a CD every year and breathes new life into each song that she touched. Her third studio album: Someone to Watch Over Me proves that Boyle is not going away anytime soon.

Unchained Melody
Is anyone getting tired of hearing covers of this song? In the ten years, multiple artists ranging from American Idol alums Clay Aiken and Constantine Maroulis to music legends Barry Manilow and Cyndi Lauper have covered the Righteous Brothers’ signature song. However, Boyle brings a touch of innocence, vocal range and an excellent arrangement to Unchained Melody. This is an impressive cover and would make the Righteous Brothers proud. Grade: 4.5/5 A-
Mad World
This Tears for Fears classic song recently returned to the public due to Adam Lambert covering the song in the 2009 American Idol season. When Lambert sang the song, he brought the emotion and power to his performance of the song, which his performance became one of the memorable performances in Idol’s history. Boyle keeps the musical arrangement of the song but performs softer on the vocals. This track may be a disappointment because Boyle has a terrific voice but she does not show her powerful range. I wish that Susan did that on this track. Grade: 4/5 B-
You Have To Be There
Susan Boyle meets the men of ABBA? I know what many readers are thinking: “What a weird combination!” While Susan does not make the listener dance like ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” she finally showcases her strong voice that has made her famous across the world. The arrangement was incredible and it is great hearing the men of ABBA write a song together again. Grade: 4.5/5 A-
Enjoy The Silence
Having this song in this album was a huge risk on Susan’s part. This song was originally written and performed by English electronic music band Depeche Mode and is considered a dance song. It seems Susan did not get the memo, but however she did an okay job singing the song. Listeners would enjoy listening to the arrangement and the choir cameo near the end but I wish that Susan had brought her A-game to this song. Grade: 3.5/5 C-
Both Sides Now
The final song that is featured in this review is Susan’s take on one of Joni Mitchell’s classics: “Both Sides Now.” Rolling Stone named the original song as part of their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, but the question is “Can Susan redeem herself after the disastrous attempt in “Enjoy The Silence?” The answer is a definite yes. Boyle’s vocal performance weaves the lyrics of the song together perfectly. Listeners who were turned off by “Enjoy the Silence” should return listening to this album because this song is a game changer for this album. Grade: 4.5/5 A-
Final Thoughts and Grade: This album has some terrific tracks like “Mad World” and “Both Sides Now” but could lose some listeners after “Enjoy the Silence.” Listeners who miss Susan’s big voice would hope that she will return to record her fourth studio album to hear a bigger range and her powerful voice return again. Nice work, Susan. Overall Grade: 21/25 B
Funny, her Enjoy The Silence is probably one of my favorites on the CD.
Actually I really like all of the tracks and that’s very unusual. I love the eclectic mix and her vocals have never been more beautiful.
I love the soft, subtlety Susan brings to many of her songs, they’re almost like a caress to your ears. On Return, Susan uses her powerful voice to its utmost advantage. If the hair on your head doesn’t stand on end while listening to this one, you must be deaf! Wonderful album. I usually prefer metal, I’m a huge Metallica and Ozzie fan, but Susan is truly gifted and I will always buy any album she puts out.
