Many thought that the Avengers film would not take off or bomb in box office.  But naysayers were proved wrong with this impeccable movie.

So here’s the basic plot of the Avengers: Thor (Chris Hemsworth)’s evil half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was charged by an alien race to prepare for an invasion of Earth.   He began to gather the materials necessary including brainwashing S.H.I.E.L.D. agents like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to do his evil bidding.   S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) began to counter the vile Asgardian God by assembling a team of heroes that include Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and Bruce Banner/the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo; voiced by Lou Ferrigno).     Will these heroes be able to defend Earth and stop Loki’s mad schemes?

The Avengers was one of the best superhero movies of the 2010s.   This film has several factors that made it one of the strongest films of 2012.

One factor that helped make the movie successful was the screenplay.   The screenplay started out as a story co-written by Joss Whedon and Zak Penn.   Whedon was able to successfully bring the story to life in the screenplay.    All of the past movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were effectively represented in this story from cameos from past Marvel Cinematic Universe’s supporting cast members: Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) to effectively using past movie clips in flashbacks.    Another success in the screenplay was the astonishing one-liners that had the audience laughing.

A second factor in the film was the excellent cast.   Whedon gathered a mixture of A-list actors, action heartthrobs and pop culture icons to star in this film.   Several of them had masterful performances.   One of the newest faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Mark Ruffalo, who inherited the Hulk from Edward Norton.    Ruffalo’s Banner was an intellectual genius with an edge and held his own with the rest of veteran Marvel movie actors.     Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey, Jr. and Tom Hiddleston also gave masterclass performances as Nick Fury, Iron Man and Loki respectfully.

The third and final factor that made the film an enjoyable experience was the visual effects.   They were sprinkled all throughout the film and were mainly featured in the battle scenes between the heroes, Loki’s rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. group and the alien race.    Those battles will definitely leave moviegoers excited for the next round or the next Avengers sequel.

Final Grade and Thoughts:  The Avengers is one of the year’s best films and will take its place alongside Spider-Man and the Dark Knight in the trinity of the finest superhero films of all time.   A+
