Jacob’s Comic Reviews is back!
This week, I looked into three fan-favorite DC titles and two hit Marvel titles!
Oh! By the way…. Spoilers are ahead!
Aquaman #23 (Creative Team: Geoff Johns/Paul Pelletier/Sean Parsons/Rod Reis)
The King of the Seven Seas received a rude awakening in the latest chapter of “Death of a King.” As Aquaman’s enemies surrounded him and a rebellious group of Atlantians prepared to release Ocean Master from Belle Reve, Aquaman solidified his love for Mera and tried to save his native home from destruction. As usual, Johns continued to hook readers into the title and left readers wondering what the hero would do next. The art team of Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons and Rod Reis continued to brilliantly hit their strive as they beautifully intrepid Johns’ vision. Hopefully, the team will continue to deliver with their streak during the Villains Month as the team highlights both Black Manta and Ocean Master. A-
Batman/Superman #3 (Creative Team: Greg Pak/Jae Lee/Yildiray Cinar/June Chung/Matt Yackey/John Kalisz)
Batman/Superman’s third issue showcased how the Dark Knight and Man of Steel of Earth-One met their counterparts on Earth-Two. While it was interesting to learn how the Earth-Two Batman and Superman met and see their father figures (Alfred and Jonathan Kent) interact, Darkseid’s cameo threw everything off. Despite that small issue, it was interesting to see the mix between Lee’s fantasy-like artwork and Cinar’s classic art styles and how they did not clash with each other. Overall, another good chapter and I hope that the Doomsday special does not throw everything off. B
Justice League #23 (Creative Team: Geoff Johns/Ivan Reis/Joe Prado/Oclair Albert/Eber Ferreira/Rod Reis)
The Trinity War ended in Justice League. The Justice League traitor was revealed! The Outsider’s motives were also revealed and the real bad guys (The Crime Syndicate of Earth-Three) reared their ugly heads! The story was filled of suspense, heartbreak and surprises galore. I would like to give props to the Justice League art team for delivering an incredible book filled with outstanding multiple page spreads. I cannot wait to pick up Forever Evil next week. A
Uncanny Avengers #11 (Creative Team: Rick Remender/Daniel Acuna/Clayton Cowles)
The Apocalypse Twins continued to plot out their plan to save mutantkind from the Red Skull’s evil schemes by recruiting the Scarlet Witch to do the impossible. Meanwhile, the bond between Sunfire and Rogue continues to grow as three of the Horsemen of Death overtake three V.I.A. (Very Important Avengers). Overall, Mr. Remender continues to perfectly mash the work from his Uncanny X-Force plotlines with the bits of storytelling from both previous Avengers scribe Brian Michael Bendis and former X-Men writer Peter Milligan. Combine that with Daniel Acuna’s improving artwork, Uncanny Avengers continues to be a must read series for any Marvel-holic. A-
Wolverine & The X-Men #35 (Creative Team: Jason Aaron/Nick Bradshaw/Walden Wong/Laura Martin)
The Hellfire Saga concluded with a bang as longtime characters were removed from the chessboard, a teen romance blossomed right before the readers’ eyes, a couple was united and a fan-favorite character returned! Jason Aaron did a great job wrapping up the loose ends and previewing the return of a long-thought dead X-Man. The art team continued to deliver strong artwork and now I think fans are ready for the Battle of the Atom crossover. B+
