On Sunday night, music’s biggest stars will come out to celebrate the best in music for the recording industry’s second biggest night outside of the Grammys…. the American Music Awards. Performers include Pop Diva Jennifer Lopez, Dance Maestro David Guetta, Country Queen Taylor Swift and R&B Superstars Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown. While the audience is expecting great performances, both the audience and the stars are asking the question: “Who will take home a 2011 American Music Award?” This blog will preview several big categories of the night and will try to narrow down who will get their respective awards.
Artist of the Year
This is a very tough category as two pop queens take on each other and one R&B powerhouse, a country superstar and an extraordinary rapper for this prestigious award. Adele has had an incredible year with the release of her critically acclaimed album 21. But does she have this in the bag? Maybe or maybe not because she faces stiff competition from Taylor Swift and Katy Perry who had successful world tours throughout this year; However, because all of the American Music Awards are based on fan vote, could Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters rally to give their Mother Monster the award or could Lil Wayne’s fans push the vote to their favorite artist’s favor?
Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist
2010 Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist Justin Bieber is looking to extend his reign in this category. But Bieber is facing off against Bruno Mars and Pitbull. Could the Beliebers, one of music’s powerful fan bases outside of Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters have voted their idol to be top dog again? Will a successful year that include a new studio album Planet Pit, an appearance on Jennifer Lopez’s LOVE? Album and a spot on Enrique Iglesias’ Euphoria World Tour help Pitbull overthrow Bieber? Or has Bruno Mars’ fans rallied to turn the vote in Mars’ favor?
Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist
2010 Incumbent Lady Gaga is defending her title as America’s favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. However, there are two people standing in Mother Monster’s way in winning the award again: Adele and Katy Perry. All three women have had an incredible 2011. From releasing incredible albums including Born this Way and 21 to launching successful tours including the Teenage Dream World Tour, these three women are the best in this field and it will be a tough call on Sunday to see whose fans turned out to vote.
Favorite Country Band/Duo/Group
Three country music super groups are hoping that their fans have rallied to have them get this famed American Music Award. This award has been absent for five award seasons. If either of these groups wins this revived award, they will join the ranks of Brooks & Dunn, Alabama and the Dixie Chicks as America’s beloved country groups. Lady Antebellum, the Zac Brown Band and the Band Perry are up for this year’s award. To sum up this battle is the rising stars vs. the veteran group. Viewers will find out on Sunday who is the 2011 alpha country group.
Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist
2011 was a great year for Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Kanye West musically. While Wayne released his successful Tha Carter IV, his first album since his prison stint, he also made cameos in songs for Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias. Another artist that had a similar year like Wayne is Nicki Minaj. Minus a prison stint, Minaj toured with Britney Spears for her Femme Fatale Tour and worked with Spears, Ke$ha, David Guetta, Flo Rida and Drake this year. The third rapper in this contest is Kanye West, who dropped the highly successful Watch the Throne album with partner-in-crime Jay-Z this year. Like other highly contested races, this one is too close to call.
Favorite Latin Artist
What do Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull have in common? The answer is that they are nominated for this award. Lopez has had a comeback year. From judging American Idol to releasing an album that peaked within the Billboard Top 10, nothing could stop Jenny from the Block from winning this award. Could J-Lo’s fans help her get her award? Not if voters who like Euphoria Tour headliner Enrique Iglesias or his tour mate Pitbull have anything to say about it.

I do not own the American Music Awards’ logo. It is trademarked by Dick Clark Productions.

Great post!
I do not really see how there is much different between the New York Times printing this or some blog. Content such as this must to be administered out more often. I wished that someone else in America would take a stand like this.
At this time it sounds like WordPress is the best blogging platform available right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?
