One of the most controversial movies in this year’s Oscar race is Zero Dark Thirty, which follows the events leading up to the death of Osama Bin Laden.

This spy thriller is somewhat of a mixed bag for several reasons.  On the plus side, you have one incredible acting performance and super cinematography. But, unfortunately, the film’s length is a problem, due to its too-detailed screenplay.

Jessica Chastain’s performance of Maya, the C.I.A. agent, was impeccable because she was able to have chemistry with every member of the ensemble.  In addition, Chastain made Maya relatable to the determined workaholics, who might be watching the film in theatres.   One scene that Chastain might have put in her reel that secured her multiple nominations was her heated confrontation with her boss, Joseph Bradley (Kyle Chandler).

Another factor to the film’s success was its’ brilliant cinematography.   Greig Fraser did a superb job showcasing director Kathryn Bigelow’s vision.   Fraser’s best work on the film ranged from the intense surprise explosion scenes that were peppered throughout the film to the assault on Osama Bin Laden’s compound.

The only problem that moviegoers will have encounter while watching Zero Dark Thirty is the length.    This could be attributed to all of the details that screenwriter and co-producer Mark Boal pushed into the film’s screenplay.  Audiences could easily lose track of what is going in the film,  which would diminish their attention span and interest in the film.

Final thoughts and grade: Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty is a great thrill ride that features an award-worthy performance from Jessica Chastain plus superb cinematography, but the lengthy film could cause problems with the viewers’ attention span.  B
