2012 might be considered to be Snow White’s year.

Earlier this year, ABC’s Once Upon a Time wrapped their first season and is starting their second season in the fall that focuses on the war between Snow White’s family (Ginnifer Goodwin) and the Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla).    Another movie Mirror Mirror starring Lily Collins and Julia Roberts as heroine and the villainess respectfully was released in the spring that earned $162 million worldwide.    But a lot of people were waiting to watch Kristen Stewart’s warrior take on the princess in Snow White and the Huntsman.

This two-hour and seven-minute film is a lot darker than the cheery Disney movies that the audience is used to; it is filled with dark, scary and creepy creatures that will make several moviegoers jump.   While it was fill with suspense and impressive battles, there were several factors that made Snow White and the Huntsman a near average movie.

There was only standout in the acting ensemble and it was Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron, who played the evil Queen Ravenna.    Theron perfectly played the classic villainess and commanded every scene that she was in.   Unfortunately, Kristen Stewart will not impress moviegoers except for Twilight fans as the title role.    Stewart’s chemistry with both Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and William (Sam Claflin) was not there and it seemed to bore the audience.

Speaking of getting bored, the screenplay by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini made this film a little longer than it needed to be.  The screenwriters should have added more to the origin of Queen Rowena and how she conquered her kingdoms.  In addition, they should have taken out several dark forest scenes and added more scenes with under utilized dwarves.

The saving grace for Snow White and the Huntsman is the special effects that are brilliantly showcased throughout the film.    From Rowena’s phantom soldiers and raven-like exits to the beautiful fairy habitat, the film’s special effects staff brought the Snow White and the Huntsman world to life.

Final thoughts and grade: While Charlize Theron and the special effects did their best to salvage this movie; Stewart’s acting and the long screenplay brought this film down from the summer blockbuster that it just have suppose to be. B-/C+

  1. Completely agree. Apart from the effects, there was definitely something lacking. Nice review!
