Welcome to an exciting edition of Jake’s Comic Book Reviews!
Today, I am taking a closer look into four of the biggest titles in the comic book industry.
Oh…By the way! Spoilers are ahead, folks!
Aquaman #24
Creative team: Geoff Johns (Writer), Paul Pelletier (Pencils), Sean Parsons (Inker) & Rod Reis (Colorist)
In the sixth chapter of Johns’ final arc on Aquaman, DC’s Chief Creative Officer delivers a huge WTF moment to the fans of the King of the Seven Seas. Aquaman discovers that Atlantis was NOT his birthright but his descendants were villains who stole the throne from the True King of Atlantis (aka the Dead King). Johns perfectly weaved the lost tale of Atlantis and why it sank in the first place. Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons and Rod Reis continued to deliver high quality artwork that will continue to attract readers after Johns leaves the title next month. A-
Justice League #24
Creative team: Geoff Johns (Writer), Ivan Reis (Penciler), Joe Prado/Oclair Albert/Eber Ferreira (Inkers) & Rod Reis (Colorist)
Almost every comic book fan knows the origins of Superman. His kind parents (Jor-El and Lara) send baby Kal-El to Earth as their dying planet Krypton and he is adopted by benevolent Jonathan and Martha Kent, who teach him about humanity and instill in him values that lead Kal-El to become the world’s most recognizable superhero. Unfortunately, Ultraman, The Man of Steel’s vile counterpart, had less than noble upbringing and Justice League’s 24th issue showcases the real story behind the Forever Evil bad guy. The Justice League creative team continues to deliver high quality content that keep this reader (and thousands of readers) hooked. It would be interesting to see how Black Adam holds up to Ultraman in next month’s Forever Evil. A+
Uncanny Avengers #13
Creative team: Rick Remember (Writer) & Daniel Acuna (Artist)
Uncanny Avengers continues to be one of Marvel’s best books! The Avengers Unity Squad has been divided and now the Apocalypse Twins are ready to do some serious damage to save mutants from the Red Skull’s upcoming onslaught. However, there might be some casualties as Captain America lost all of his hearing and Wolverine was badly beaten by Daken. I have a feeling that fans cannot wait to see the long-awaited grudge match between Rogue and the Scarlet Witch! Remender continues to hook readers in his incredible script and Daniel Acuna’s artwork has grown on me. This combination makes Uncanny Avengers and I cannot wait to read the next chapter. A
Wolverine & The X-Men #37
Creative Team: Jason Aaron (Writer), Giuseppe Camuncoli (Penciler), Andrew Currie (Finisher) & Matt Milla (Colorist)
Battle of the Atom is winding down but in the second to last chapter of the crossover event delivers some explosive scenes. From the bickering between Cyclops and Wolverine’s squads to the hilarious dialogue in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, it had something for everyone. Aaron continues to prove that he is one of Marvel’s master writers by perfecting the eloquent balance of comedy and drama. Also, I want to give a shout out to the art team because the fight scenes and massive page spreads rocked and will give fans chills just by looking at it. I hope everyone comes out of Battle of the Atom in one piece but I believe that is definitely not going to happen. A
