Space is truly Hollywood’s final frontier!
Since the Star Wars prequels were released in early 2000s, the movies industry exited the Earth’s atmosphere and entered the cosmos with giant blockbusters such as Avatar, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, Gravity and Guardians of the Galaxy!
Another brave director famed for The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, Christopher Nolan, decided to create and release his own space opus: Interstellar.
Interstellar focuses on a widowed astronaut named Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), as he joins three other astronauts: Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway), Romilly (David Gyasi) and Doyle (Wes Bentley) in a search for a new alternative world. Cooper leaves behind two children, Tom (Timothee Chalamet, later Casey Affleck) and Murphy (Mackenzie Foy, later Jessica Chastain), who is completely devastated with his departure.
There were several outstanding factors that lead into Interstellar’s success as a film. Oscar winners and nominee McConaughey, Hathaway and Chastain made up the nucleus of the film and delivered powerful performances that were worthy of future Oscars. While Affleck, Matt Damon and Michael Caine round out the Oscar-familiar list, relative newcomer Mackenzie Foy delivered a heart-wrenching performance as the younger Murphy, which could nab her a Young Artist Award in the future.
Both Hoyte van Hoytema and Paul Franklin lead the charge with two of Interstellar’s brightest stars in the film: the cinematography and the visual effects! The duo’s impeccable skills successfully brought a dystopian Dust Bowl future and arctic worlds to life, which will impress every moviegoer.
The final home run belonged to the superb Hans Zimmer! His haunting score and orchestrations perfectly tied together with several scenes that would leave you on the edge of your seat!
Unfortunately, there was only one down side to this film: it was way too lengthy! Yes, the Nolan Brothers’ screenplay had a variety bag of one-liners, zingers and heartbreaking moments…but there were scenes that needed to be either shortened or moved to the Deleted Scenes featurettes for your Blu-Ray DVD copy of the film.
Final thoughts: The quartet of terrific acting, excellent special effects, a haunting score and a sufficient storyline makes Interstellar one of 2014’s best films and officially starts the Oscars race! A
