Welcome to the third volume of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews for 2021! We got a lot of music to unpack, so let’s get this party started.
The Good Times and The Bad Ones by Why Don’t We
Boyband Why Don’t We is back on the music scene. The group consists of American Idol alum Daniel Seavey, Zach Herron, Jack Avery, Corbyn Besson, and Jonah Marais. For their sophomore album, The Good Times and The Bad Ones, the quintet evolved their sound equivalent to Generation Z and Generation Alpha’s Backstreet Boys. As someone who doubted them when they first burst onto the scene in Logan Paul’s videos, Why Don’t We has done an exceptional job with this album. The songwriting is superb, and I have to give kudos to Daniel Seavey for working with Jaycen Joshua on the production value of this album. I feel that Why Don’t We just expanded their shelf-life as a group and in the music industry. B
Tracks to Download: “Fallin’ (Adrenaline)”, “Lotus Inn,” “Grey,” & “Stay.”
“Lo Vas a Olvidar” by Billie Eilish & Rosalia
Two Grammy winners, Billie Eilish and Rosalia, teamed up for a heavily anticipated collaboration. “Lo Vas a Olivdar,” marked the “Bad Guy” singer-songwriter’s first venture in the Pop Latino market. The duo co-wrote “Lo Vas a Olivdar,” which translates to “You’ll Forget It” in English, with their respective right-hand men: Finneas and Pablo Diaz-Reixa. While the moody song might impress music lovers and Euphoria fans, it will take a few listens to become a fan of the tune. C+/B-
“I NEED YOU” by Jon Batiste
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert bandleader and music director Jon Batiste will release his latest record on March 19. His first single off the album is “I NEED YOU.” Mr. Batiste is one of our generation’s Jazz Masters, and he did not disappoint. “I NEED YOU’s” impeccable arrangement will make listeners get up and dance. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album! A-
“Line by Line” by JP Saxe featuring Maren Morris
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter JP Saxe is having a breakout moment. Following his successful collaboration with Julia Michaels (“If the World Was Ending”), he turned to another top boundary-breaking singer-songwriter for another collaboration: Maren Morris. “The Bones” performer and JP delivered a superb collaboration: “Line by Line.” It is a tender collaboration, and the track showcases both artists at top form. I could see this song do very well on both the country and pop music charts. B+
“The Lucky Ones” by Pentatonix
Pentatonix is releasing their sixth studio album: The Lucky Ones. The A cappella group (Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee) dropped their third single: “The Lucky Ones.” The song is the perfect reflection track as the group celebrates its tenth anniversary. I got chills throughout the song, and I genuinely believe that “The Lucky Ones” is one of the best vocal tracks of 2021. A
