Millions of pop culture aficionados are heading to their favorite comic book store today to celebrate Free Comic Book Day!
Celebrating its 13th year, Free Comic Book Day has grown in size due to the popularity of box office giants like Spider-Man 2, X2, the Iron Man franchise and of course, The Avengers!
Today, the big two publishers (DC Comics and Marvel Comics) released two issues each that focus on several upcoming storylines.
The New 52: Future’s End (Writers: Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen & Dan Jurgens; Artists: Ethan Van Sciver, Patrick Zircher, Aaron Lopresti/Art Thibert)
DC Comics’ first Free Comic Book Day comic previews the post-apocalypse landscape that will dramatically shape The New 52 for years to come. Readers are first transported to 35 years in the future where harden aged heroes are fighting the vicious Brother Eye satellite who transformed the heroes into monstrous cyborgs. They also learn how Batman Beyond was sent to their timeline (but five years after Forever Evil). Both the writing and artwork intrigued me and I think this 52 issue maxi-series will be a title that fans can rally behind. A-
Teen Titans Go! (Writers: Sholly Fisch & Merrill Hagan/Artists: Ben Bates & Jorge Corona)
In this DC Nation free comic, the Teen Titans deal with a demonic pizza and a round of mini-golf. Both writers were able to capture the magic that longtime fans of both animation series would love! The artwork was very consistent and I would like to give props both Hagan and Corona for paying homage to the classic DC Universe. (Keep an eye out for the villain and the dozen Easter Eggs!) B+
Marvel: Guardians of the Galaxy (Writers: Brian Michael Bendis, Jim Starlin & Dan Slott/Artists: Nick Bradshaw, Scott Hanna, Jim Starlin, Andy Smith, Giuseppe Camuncoli & John Dell)
This is it, True Believers! The House of Ideas delivers three short stories that will rock Earth-616! You will be shocked as Agent Venom joins the Guardians of the Galaxy and shutter at the returns of both Thanos and Morlun! Congrats to the Marvel Editorial Team for putting the best writers and artists for creating some of the best teasers of the 2010s. A
Rocket Raccoon (Writer: Joe Caramagna; Artist: Adam Archer)
Unfortunately, the Rocket Raccoon Free Comic Book Day issue was a wreck! It was too boring and a time waster. I wished that we could have had a nice expanded preview of Spider-Verse or a tease of Original Sin. D
