While The Voice may have overtaken American Idol as the United States’ premiere singing competition, the show has struggled to turn their alumni into household names.
Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks and Adam Lambert are among the countless names that roll out of music lovers’ tongues, when they think of the long-running FOX show.
Outside of The Voice’s hardcore fans, runner-ups such as Dia Frampton, Frenchie Davis, Juliet Simms, Chris Mann and the Swon Brothers have outshined a majority of the winners (with the exceptions of Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery) in the public eye with their singles and marketability. [At the time of this article’s publishing, neither Season Five winner Tessanne Chin nor Season Six winner Josh Kaufman’s debut albums have been released.]
Even Adam Levine stated to Rolling Stone, “The Voice is very successful, but it’s got ways to go if it wants to have as profound an impact as ‘Idol.’ I’m not going to lie to you: I think there are problems… Millions of people watch the show every week and fall in love with a singer, then you don’t hear much from them.” (He retracted his comments in an interview with MTV)
If there is one alum that has the chance to break this so-called Voice curse, it is Will Champlin!
The Season Five Team Adam finalist recently released his first post-Voice album: Borrowing Trouble. This album features high quality productions that showcases the amount of dedication and love that Will and longtime friend, Steve Gallagher, put into this album. It also demonstrates that hardworking and devoted artists do not need the magic touch of A-list producers and writers such as Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco or Diane Warren to produce an impeccable album.
Borrowing Trouble also has superb tracks that will be stuck in your head all-day. From the Egyptian-like “Eye of the Pyramid” to uplifting “While We’re Young,” music lovers will not lose their grins after listening to this album. In addition to the superb production and ear candy-like tracks, Borrowing Trouble also cements Will as one of the Millennial Generation’s rising superstars.
Throughout the release weekend, Will shared multiple status updates that included the album’s placement at #21 on iTunes’ Pop chart and #90 on iTunes’ overall chart, which leapfrogged over veteran artists such as Adele, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake.
Congrats on the album, Will! It will be amazing to see where this journey will take you next!
Album grade: A+++ (“Borrowing Trouble” is also Jake’s Take’s Album of the Month)
