Welcome to Pop Bytes!
This new segment is dedicated to my thoughts on the latest breaking news in the world of pop culture!
Here’s what happened this week:
Julianne Hough Returns to “DWTS”: The two-time Dancing with the Stars champ is back in America’s favorite ballroom as the full-time fourth judge! She will join stalwarts Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli on the desk, when the show returns in mid-to-late September.
My take: Julianne was pretty petty as a guest judge as she handed out verbal jabs to both Mark and Maks during her time on as a guest judge in previous seasons, which really hurt her creditability. I think that ABC and DWTS made a bad decision with the hiring. I also think that they should have hired either former pros Maks, Edyta Sliwinska or Kym Johnson or fan-favorite guest judge Paula Abdul to join the panel in Hough’s place.
The “AGT” judges reveal their Wild Cards: Social media buzzed when America’s Got Talent announced the judges’ Wild Card acts. The King of All Media brought back comedian Wendy Liebman, while Heidi Klum chose fan-favorite act Flight Crew Jump Rope. AGT stalwart Howie Mandel brought back controversial magician Mike Super and Scary Spice picked the Bad Boys of Ballet.
My take: I agree with Howard, Heidi and Mel B’s picks! All three of those acts deserve a second chance in this year’s competition. As for Howie, he missed the boat big time by picking Mike Super. He has no redeeming factor because his act got old quick and Desmond was too childish! I would have selected One Voice Children’s Choir, Mighty Atom Jr. or Beach Avenue for the spot.
Miley Cyrus returns for MTV Video Music Awards: Get ready, MTV…she’s back! Miley Cyrus will appear at this weekend’s ceremonies. While it is unknown what role Ms. Cyrus will play at this year’s event, fans can expect performances from Usher, Maroon 5, 5 Seconds of Summer, Sam Smith and Beyoncé (who will take home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award).
My take: MTV must not have remembered her infamous collaboration with Robin Thicke! It is totally okay for her to present, but Miley should be twerking on stage as a performer.
The View” reveals new home & logo: Multiple sources including The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Daily News reported that in addition to getting new hosts, they are also getting a facial in the studio and logo department. The show will film at Katie Couric’s old studio at the ABC Broadcast Center. The View will also follow in the footsteps of both Today and Good Morning America by adding a social media component to the broadcast.
My take: While I am excited to see Rosie and Whoopi as host and moderator respectfully, I think more viewers would be more ecstatic to learn who will be co-hosting with them instead of this type of filler news!
“Avengers & X-Men: AXIS” heads to opposite land: When Marvel Comics revealed their November 2014 solicitations, readers were surprised to learn that some of their favorites will be going to the dark side. Iron Man, Scarlet Witch and Storm are just some of the heroes that will find themselves on the opposite end of the law.
My take: Avengers & X-Men: AXIS continues to be one of Marvel’s most promising stories! I, for one, would like to see Storm’s dark side expose. Unfortunately, I am disappointed where the creators are heading with Iron Man and Scarlet Witch. Both characters have been on the redemption road for years and it is saddening to see the House of Ideas deteriorate these characters.

Well, if you listen very carefully, evidently you haven’t, Len said the same thing to Maks and to Mark (which Len has said over and over before in other shows, its nothing new with Mark). Len just used different words than Julianne. Of the four judges, Julianne and Len are the only ones with the technical background in the ballroom dances. That’s why his the head judge. I think she’s proved to be tough but fair critic and not beat around the bush. Her style is different…no-holds-barred style which makes for “great TV.”
