Jake’s Take: The 2018 San Diego Comic-Con Wrap Up

The 2018 San Diego Comic-Con has concluded. As thousands of fans and media industry professionals race to the San Diego International Airport to catch their flights, here are some of the top announcements of the pop culture convention:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Is Back!

One of the most significant science fiction and horror television series of the 1990s is back! The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Buffy The Vampire Slayer is coming back to television next year.  Joss Whedon, the franchise’s creator, will join forces with Monica Owusu-Breen and 20^th Century Fox Television to introduce a new generation of fans to the famous vampire slayer. However, a new black actress will take on the role that made Sarah Michelle Gellar a household name.

Grant Morrison + Liam Sharp on Green Lantern

Superstar writer Grant Morrison (Final Crisis, JLA, and New X-Men) and rising artist Liam Sharpe (Wonder Woman) will expand the Green Lantern mythology starting this fall. While previous writers such as Geoff Johns and Robert Venditti wrote epic multi-issue space operas such as “Blackest Night” and “Godhead,” it is expected that this creative team will only focus on Hal Jordan as a space cop. IGN reported that relaunched Green Lantern series will drop its first issue in November.

Bridging The Star Wars Universe

According to Newsarama, Marvel will bridge the Star Wars universe together in a 24-part maxi-series. Jody Houser’s Star Wars: Age of Republic, Greg Pak’s Star Wars: Age of Rebellion, and Tom Taylor’s Star Wars: Age of Resistance will focus on characters from all nine films. The issue is divided into two separate stories that will feature heroes and villains. The artists and release dates have not been announced.

 

“Batman: Hush” Gets Animated Treatment

One of the greatest Batman stories of all-time will finally get an animated adaption. Comic Book Resources revealed that Warner Bros. Animation would transform the Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s 12-part Batman storyline that introduced the villainous Hush into the DC Universe into the DC Universe Animated Original Movies.  Other animated films that were announced at the San Diego Comic-Con include a new Wonder Woman film and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five.

 

 

DC Heroes Goes Into Crisis Mode

Batman and Mister Miracle scribe Tom King will bring a “Crisis” back to the DC Universe. IGN confirmed that King along with artists Clay Mann and Mitch Gerads would publish the personal Heroes in Crisis story.  The story will focus on a murder that took place at the superhero therapy center called Sanctuary. In addition to DC’s core trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, the story will also center on Booster Gold and Harley Quinn, which were handpicked by DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio, because those characters made mistakes and look for redemption.

 

Nicolas Cage & John Mulaney Join ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’

Entertainment Weekly reported that more Spider-Man related characters would join the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse cast.  Nicolas Cage is voicing Spider-Man Noir, while the former Saturday Night Live writer will portray Spider-Ham.  The duo will join Shameik Moore (Miles Morales), Jake Johnson (Peter Parker), and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy) in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will drop into theatres on Christmas Day.

Welcome Back, Uncanny X-Men!

One of Marvel Comics’ final announcements involved the return of the X-Men’s flagship title-Uncanny X-Men.  Newsarama reported that the legendary title would make its comeback this fall. Earlier this month, Jake’s Take predicted that Marvel Comics would announce the title’s revival at San Diego Comic-Con. However, the House of Ideas has yet to name the characters would star in the title or the creators that would construct the next chapter in X-Men history.
