Welcome to the Fall 2018 edition of Jake’s Take’s Book Recommendations! Here are some of my favorite reads that I highly recommend that you check out at your local bookstore or Barnes & Noble.
The Racketeer by John Grisham (First Published: 2012; Released in Paperback: 2013)
John Grisham’s legal thriller, The Racketeer, follows Malcolm Bannister, an African American, and former Marine, who is trying to rebuild his life following his accidental involvement surrounding a crooked lobbyist’s scandal that led him to prison. However, when a judge is found murdered, and only Bannister knows the killer’s true identity, he is launched into a twisted adventure that helps him establish a new life outside of prison.
Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks (First Published: 2017; Released in Paperback: 2018)
The Oscar-winning actor published a collection of short stories that was inspired by his typewriter collection. Tom Hanks’ first fiction book featured a plethora of stories that involved a diverse cast of characters that range from a small town newspaper columnist to a father and son surfing duo. Many media outlets including NPR and USA Today named Uncommon Type one of the best books of 2017.
Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew Sullivan (First Published: 2017)
Matthew Sullivan’s Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore focuses on Lydia Smith, an employee at the fictional Denver-based bookstore. When one of Lydia’s regular customers commits suicide inside the shop and leaves behind everything in her name, she makes a shocking discovery. One that forces Lydia to confront her past and solve a mystery that still haunts her to the present day.
The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every President by Chris Whipple (First Published: 2017; Updated Paperback Edition released in 2018)
Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist Chris Whipple wrote in 2017 about the history of the White House Chief of Staffs and their relationships with previous Presidents of the United States from Nixon to Obama, which the updated 2018 paperback edition included a chapter on the Trump Administration. Mr. Whipple interviewed 18 living chiefs (including Reince Priebus) and two former presidents for this book and touched on several political moments in history that ranged from Watergate and the Reagan Revolution to the Iraq War and Obamacare. The book received critical praise from Time, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and legendary journalist Tom Brokaw.
MJ: The Genius of Michael Jackson by Steve Knopper (First published: 2015; Paperback edition released in 2016)
Journalist Steve Knopper delivered an impeccable lookback of the King of Pop’s career in MJ: The Genius of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson superfans will be impressed as Knopper tracked Jackson’s humble beginnings in Gary, Indiana to his partnership with Quincy Jones that launched him into superstardom. The author also investigated into the controversies that surrounded the “Billie Jean” singer-songwriter that haunted him until his sudden death in 2009.
Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House by Omarosa Manigault Newman (First published: 2018)
The former Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison showcased her history and professional relationship with her former mentor, President Donald Trump, in this New York Times best-selling book. Mrs. Manigault Newman spilled secrets about working in the Trump Administration and revealed her relationships with political leaders and Trump Family insiders.
Journeys: An American Story by Andrew Tisch & Mary Skafidas (First published: 2018)
Co-authors Andrew Tisch and Mary Skafidas gathered 72 essays from VIPs who spilled details on how their families immigrated into the United States to chase the American Dream. From political leaders such as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao to entertainment icons Tony Bennett and Marlo Thomas, Journeys: An American Story weaves 72 unique stories of how these families conquered the odds and made a life for their families’ future generations.
The Good Neighbor: The Life & Work of Fred Rogers by Maxwell King (First published: 2018)
If you were a member of either the Generation X and Millennial age groups, the late and great Fred Rogers played an essential role in your childhood. Author Maxwell King revealed how the beloved public figure and television star overcame numerous obstacles in both his personal and professional life to become the world’s favorite neighbor. Also, readers will appreciate the interviews that King conducted with people closest to Mr. Rogers including several Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood cast and crew members.
What The Afternoon Knows: A Memoir by Pat Sylvia (First published: 2018)
Finally, I want to end this edition of Jake’s Take’s Book Recommendations by highlighting an extraordinary book. What The Afternoon Knows: A Memoir is written by my grandmother, Pat Sylvia. In this memoir, my grandmother revealed the challenges she faced growing up and in her later years. She also shared the life lessons she accumulated throughout her life.
