It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter and Epic Records recording artist Mimi Webb to Jake’s Take.
The 19-year-old United Kingdom recording artist is gaining steam thanks to her single: “Before I Go,” which was featured in one of social media superstar Charli D’Amelio’s TikTok videos. The video received over 15 million views and 5.7 million likes on TikTok. Several media outlets such as Consequences of Sound, Wonderland Magazine, and Yahoo! In this edition of Jake’s Take’s Conversation, Mimi Webb talked about overcoming the challenges that she faced in the recording industry, her latest single: “I’ll Break My Heart Again,” and which recording artists are on her collaborations list.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music? How did that passion evolve into the desire to pursue a career in the recording industry?
Mimi Webb: I have always loved being an entertainer since I was 8! I love making people smile & laugh! I love learning people’s stories & backgrounds; my mum always said since I was a little girl I have always loved putting on shows for the family, and I remember I would always sell little paper tickets I made for my shows for £5 (Laughs) I was stretching it. Also, I am a massive fan of good energy! So I think over the years of always performing and just feeling like I’d done it all before, I grew to find my desire for it all. I remember being an artist represents every corner of who I am and makes me the best version of myself.
Jacob Elyachar: Could you describe your songwriting process with my readers?
Mimi Webb: My process is always starting the morning with steaming my vocals and warming up. When I am going into the studio, I still want to make sure I am vocal ready at all times because when I am singing melodies, I want to make sure I can hit the big notes if I feel that’s where the song needs to go, then get into the studio. We will start with some piano chords/guitar chords or a beat! I very rarely start with a beat, though, as I usually go straight in for the piano first and build from there. I then often come with some ideas of how I have been feeling before entering the studio. Then, I start singing some melodies and getting the song together, and then I begin to start with the lyrics. After that I then vocal it all down as I always have to get into the right mindset to vocal demos, I cannot dip in and out I have to do it all in the same hour sort of thing so I can deliver it accurately otherwise it throws me off.
Jacob Elyachar: What have been some of the challenges that you have faced throughout your career? How have you overcome those obstacles?
Mimi Webb: A big challenge of mine was being compared to others a lot within the industry! I went through a dark eight months as I was always feeling so down and started to stop believing in myself! I then started to get unwell, and it took an impact on me physically and mentally, this was all last year! I remember feeling like my sparkle had gone, and all the great energy people told me I would bring into the room just felt like it had disappeared entirely. Still, then when I released my first single “Before I Go” that all changed, seeing the fantastic reaction people were having to me and my music I believe did save me in so many ways, I am now better than ever. I am ready for the ups and downs & feel like I can get through anything now!
Jacob Elyachar: Your song, “Before I Go,” was incorporated into TikTok personality Charli D’Amelio’s video. The video generated over 15 million views on the social media app. What did it mean to you that she picked your song?
Mimi Webb: I was absolutely over the moon! Everything about it was incredible, and I really could not believe it all, Charli is such a lovely person who has her support me and my music was such a fantastic feeling!
Jacob Elyachar: Let’s talk about your single: “I’ll Break My Heart Again.” Could you tell my readers the story behind the song?
Mimi Webb: The story behind the song about feels that you are with someone great for you, but you still cannot shack that feeling of always being in love with the person before, you know that it’s not right for you to go back there, but you cannot help but know where your heart truly belongs, so the whole dynamic of this song is about having that fight with yourself in your mind about what direction to go in.
Jacob Elyachar: Which singers, songwriters, and producers are on your dream collaborations list? How would they enhance your sound?
Mimi Webb: Adele, Mark Ronson, Billie Eilish, John Legend, and Sam Smith! These are such inspirations to me and to be able to create with these people would mean the world, I also would love one day to do the James Bond theme song, to write and sing it would be a dream!
Jacob Elyachar: What are your favorite social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter)? Why do they stand out?
Mimi Webb: Instagram is my favorite as I love to interact with my followers & be able to check in with them at any time.
Jacob Elyachar: If you had the opportunity to meet with singers who want to enhance their careers, what advice would you share with them?
Mimi Webb: My advice to them would be to always think about how you are feeling, allow yourself to have the bad days and good days. Make sure to have fun while you are doing those music videos, interviews, and studio time! Be kind to everyone, and be yourself ALWAYS! When you are in the studio, remember that space lets you let out your emotions and speak to people about anything you feel.
