Artists to Watch
Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch section is back! Here are some of the artists that I believe could play a significant role in the music industry.
Gray LP by BYLAND
Albuquerque, New Mexico native BYLAND kicks off this edition of Artists to Watch. The cinematic folk and indie rock artist’s music has gotten the attention of various media outlets, including American Songwriter, KUPR, and PopMatters. With the help of multi-instrumentalist Nathan Yaccino, mixer Andy Park, and mastering from Ed Brooks, BYLAND’s Gray LP is a good record from an artist that could be the next Maggie Rogers. A-
Tracks to Download: “Shadow,” “Mine,” “I’m Sorry,” “Mother,” & “Believe.”
When It’s All Said And Done by Giveon
Epic Records standout Giveon released his latest extended play: When It’s All Said And Done. What I love about Giveon is his rich vocal tone. This tone would remind millennials and Generation Xers of Ruben Studdard and Brian McKnight, respectively. Giveon continues to showcase his potential star power, and I believe that he stays on this path, he could be this decade’s The Weeknd. B+
Tracks to Download: “Still Your Best,” “Last Time,” & “Stuck On You.”
Riley-EP by RILEY
I first became a fan of Amber Riley when she stole the show as Mercedes Jones on Glee. After conquering Dancing with the Stars and the West End, she finally released her debut extended play. Riley-EP showcases the Grammy-nominated and Olivier-winning actress at her most pleasing vocally. Also, keep an ear out for BJ the Chicago Kid as he makes a cameo on the EP. I hope that several streaming services and radio stations pick up some of the tracks because Amber Riley’s music is needed in the R&B world. A-
Tracks to Download: “BGE,” “Temporary,” “Ride,” & “A Moment.”
“Number One” by Chey Rose
Chey Rose dropped a new single: “Number One.” This pop-R&B infused single reminds from the late 2000s/early to mid-2010s. “Number One” is a hypnotic song from the first few seconds, and Chey Rose’s superb vocals stand out in the bland pop music world. B+
“Deep Water” by GHOSTE
New York City-based singer-songwriter Jenny Bruce is known as GHOSTE. She released her first single off of their upcoming debut: “Deep Water.” I believe that music lovers would be fully immersed with this tune. “Deep Water” is a strong single and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for their self-titled album, which is expected to drop on October 30. “Youth” by Sam Roberts Band
The Sam Roberts Band rounds out this edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews. The Canadian indie rock band and six-time Juno Award-winning group released their latest single: “Youth.” The track instantly takes listeners back to their childhood (mine was in Overland Park, KS) and the fond memories it provokes.
