It is hard to believe that we are already in the Group A playoffs for The Masked Singer: Season Four.
This season, iconic rapper Busta Rhymes was unmasked as the Dragon, while the Gremlin (Oscar-nominated actor and boxer Mickey Rourke) self-evicted from the show. Tonight, Popcorn, Giraffe, Sun, and the Snow Owl Masks faced off for a spot in the Season Four Top Nine.
Which masked performers stepped up to the plate? Did the panelists (Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger) correctly deduce the eliminated singer’s identity? Also, which panelist was one step closer to getting the Golden Ear? Read on to find out!
Before Group A performed, Nick revealed that Jenny McCarthy correctly deduced that Mickey Rourke was the Gremlin. Plus, the group got a surprise from longtime guest panelist Joel McHale, who dressed up as Robin Thicke and briefly sang a few bars of “Blurred Lines.” As Joel joined the rest of the panelists, Popcorn Mask took the stage and performed Harry Styles’ “Falling.” After a few weeks and research, I believe that Popcorn Mask is the iconic Taylor Dayne. Robin called the performance “outstanding,” and Joel McHale called her voice “incredible.” Tonight, drones handed the panelists clues. Popcorn’s clue was the planet Venus. The panelists guessed Gloria Gaynor (Joel McHale), Katy Perry (Ken Jeong), and Vanessa Williams (Jenny McCarthy).
Joel McHale entertained the panel with a brief dance celebration to “Let’s Hear It For the Boys.” I do not like the Giraffe Mask. In his pre-performance animation, the Giraffe revealed that they overcame a massive health set back. Tonight, they performed Kool and the Gang’s “Get Down on It.” While he had Joel McHale dancing on the panelists’ desk, I was bored by the performance. His drone clue was a giant domino. The panelists guessed Travis Barker (Robin Thicke), Scott Wolf (Joel McHale), and Shia LaBeouf (Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger).
Ken Jeong bored the entire audience until Nick Cannon had to break up his rant. As the sleepy Giraffe walked off the stage, the history-making duo was the next act to perform. The pair revealed that they were the anchors during formidable challenges in their lives. Tonight, the duo performed Meghan Trainor and John Legend’s “Like I’m Going to Lose You” and I got chills. However, the duo could be a country music superstar couple (maybe Garth and Trisha?). Jenny stated they reminded her of herself, and Donny and Robin loved their harmonization. Their clue drone brought out a witches’ hat. The panelists guessed Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams (Ken Jeong), Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood (Joel McHale and Jenny McCarthy).
The Sun is one of Season Four’s frontrunners. She delivered a fiery performance of Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You.” In her pre-performance package, the Sun burned nasty rumors out of her life and grew up in a fractured home. She sang Kesha’s “Praying,” and it was another magical performance. I guess that the Sun is LeAnn Rimes. I listened to “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” and “How Do I Live.” Nicole declared the Sun that she delivered one of the best female vocals in show history. The final clue drone of the evening carried a Magic 8 Ball! The panel guessed Mandy Moore (Jenny McCarthy), Katharine McPhee (Robin Thicke), and Carrie Underwood (Nicole Scherzinger).
After a brief recap of the evening, Nick Cannon revealed that The Giraffe was eliminated from the competition! As Popcorn, the Snow Owls, and the Sun left the stage, the Men in Black brought out the panelists’ first impressions. Ken changed his original guess (Will.i.am) to Shia LaBeouf, while Nicole guessed Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jenny’s first impression guess was Travis Barker, but changed it to Seth Green. Robin Thicke’s first impression guess was Jaleel White and changed it to Travis Barker.
It turned out the Giraffe was BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN!
Next week, the Group B Playoffs take place!
