The Masked Singer: Season Nine Final Three is here!
Tonight, the California Rolls, Macaw, and Medusa faced off for a chance to compete for the Golden Mask! Which two performers were voted through to the finale? Who was sent home? Did any panelists (Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg) correctly deduce the eliminated performer’s identity? Read on to find out!
After Nick Cannon introduced the panel with an elaborate opening number, he revealed that all three performers would perform in a three-way Battle Royale later that evening. The California Rolls went first and admitted they had a number one moment in the pre-performance package. Tonight, they sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway,” and I knew it was Scott Hoying’s voice in the beginning, which meant that Pentatonix were the California Rolls! Jenny declared them to be “the ones to beat.” Due to Broadway, they revealed they were connected with Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg. Jenny stated it was either Pentatonix or the cast of Dear Evan Hansen. Nicole thought it was the cast of Spring Awakening. The Masked Singer audience booed Ken after he suggested the In the Heights film cast.
Medusa Mask has had quite the journey. She revealed that she had lost her biggest cheerleader (possibly her mother or sister) and said she was pregnant with her son. Tonight, Medusa Mask tackled Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” I immediately got chills, and Joss Stone’s voice again ran through my mind. Ken and Nicole were on the Masked Singer panelists’ table, and Jenny praised her for taking them to church! Nicole also declared Medusa Mask to be the frontrunner. Medusa’s connection came from Robin, and she revealed that both of their voices went on a journey that earned them both a platinum record. Robin thought Medusa was Grimes, while Nicole could not determine the person’s identity. Ken thought it was Dido, and the audience booed him again.
When Macaw sang One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” I immediately heard David Archuleta’s voice! He rarely performs dance-pop tracks, but he delivered an epic performance with the Masked Singer studio audience singing along with all the panelists on their feet. Nicole loved that the Macaw put on a concert, and Robin called it “macawsome.” Macaw said his connection was with Nicole, as they are fond of the Phillippines. Nicole thought it was David Archuleta (ding-ding-ding), as he has a massive fanbase in the Phillippines. Robin thought it was Daniel Bedingfield due to a connection with a previous performer – Pepper Mask (Natasha Bedingfield).
The panel introduced the final Season Nine Battle Royale! Nicole predicted that it would be “savage.” All of them sang Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby.” The California Rolls chose an R&B/doo-wop approach to the song with a beatbox ending. Next, Macaw brought out a steamy Caribbean twist to his version. Finally, Medusa closed it off by transforming it into a power rock anthem. Nicole called it “the craziest Battle Royale” of the season.
After the audience and the panel voted, time ran out for the California Rolls!!! WOW!!!!!!! They should have been next week’s final! Nicole guessed the Pitch Perfect, while Ken suggested the In the Heights film cast. Robin guessed Pentatonix and Jenny joined him. ROBIN, JENNY, and I were right…PENTATONIX WERE THE CALIFORNIA ROLLS!!!
Next week, The Masked Singer: Season Nine finale is the Macaw versus Medusa!
