Welcome to another exciting edition of New Music Releases!
This week, I reviewed new albums from Goodie Mob and Alabama plus hot singles from Drew Six, Eminem, Enrique Iglesias and Pentatonix.
Age Against the Machine by Goodie Mob
For the first time in nine years, Atlanta-based Hip-hop group Goodie Mob has released an album full of new material. This is an interesting album to listen to because of the group’s fusion of Hip-hop and Hip-house. The beats are fresh and it is great to hear that the group incorporated guest cameos from T.I., Janelle Monae and Big Rube. The only problem that music lovers would have this is that at times the track slows down and then speeds back up again. Otherwise, Age Against the Machine will introduce a new generation to Atlanta Hip-hop. B
Tracks to Download: “I’m Set,” “Pinstripes” & “Special Education”
Alabama & Friends by Alabama & Various Artists
Country cover albums continue to blossom since the 2012 Lionel Richie duet album Tuskegee dropped. This year, some of the hottest names (Rascal Flatts, Jason Aldean and Trisha Yearwood) came together to pay tribute to one of the greatest bands in country music: Alabama. The band had incredible chemistry with each of the guest artists that collaborated with them and true country lovers and novices would equally enjoy listening to this album. A
Tracks to Download: “Tennessee River (with Jason Aldean),” “Love in the First Degree (with Luke Bryan),” “Old Flame (with Rascal Flatts),” “Forever’s As Far As I’ll Go (with Trisha Yearwood)” & “I’m In a Hurry (with Florida Georgia Line)”
“What Kind of Fool Am I” by Drew Six
One of Jake’s Take’s favorite artists, Drew Six, released a new single. “What Kind of Fool Am I” features some incredible multiple part harmonies and strong lyrics from Drew himself. It is a robust acoustic track that indicates that Drew continues to grow as an artist and I hope that he can release an album filled with quality songwriting and superb musical arrangement. A
“Loco” by Enrique Iglesias featuring Romeo Santos
The Latin superstar released his first Spanish single for his upcoming bilingual album. “Loco” features an impeccable Bachata music and the first time that the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has teamed with Romeo Santos, who duel over the affections of a beautiful woman. B+
“Berzerk” by Eminem
During Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Eminem teased his new single: “Berzerk” from upcoming eighth studio album: The Marshall Mathers LP 2. This Rick Rubin-produced track features smooth beats from the King of Hip-Hop and I strongly believe that everyone should start counting down to November 5. A+
“Can’t Hold Us” by Pentatonix
Pentatonix’s cover of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ monster hit: “Can’t Hold Us” is the best cover of the year! Between Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola’s signature bass notes and beat boxing to the superb showcase of Mitch Grassi’s full vocal range (watch out, Adam Lambert!) in his solos, this shows why Pentatonix is a force to be reckoned with in the a cappella world! A+
