Welcome to one of the most diverse editions of New Music Releases in Jake’s Take history!
Because the Internet by Childish Gambino
The second studio album from Community actor and comedian Donald Glover is probably the biggest surprise of the year! Because the Internet gives listeners something that Yeezus and Magna Carta Holy Grail have lacked…creativity! The beats are superb and the lyrics showcase Glover’s live in the entertainment industry. In addition, keep an ear out for Chance the Rapper, Jhene Aiko and Azealia Banks who make cameo appearances throughout the album. B+
Tracks to Download: “I. Crawl,” “II. Worldstar,” “IV. Sweatpants” & “V. 3005”
The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1-EP by Zac Brown Band
What happens when Zac Brown Band collaborates with rock icon Dave Grohl? The answer is the first volume of The Grohl Sessions! I personally think that the iconic Foo Fighters leader helped the band reach their full potential in testing the waters in the Folk rock arena. This four-track EP would definitely put a smile on your face and be a great stocking stuffer for the music lovers in your life. A
Of the four tracks, “The Muse” and “Day For The Dead” are the two strongest tracks on the EP.
iTunes Session-EP by Ellie Goulding
Ellie Goulding released her first session with iTunes. It was great to hear the British songbird perform a mix of acoustic and pop-house versions of some of her greatest singles. If you are curious to discover her music or need to buy something from the “Lights” singer…this EP is the album for you! A-
Tracks to Download: “Burn (iTunes session),” “How Long Will I Love You (iTunes session),” “Anything Could Happen (iTunes session)” & “Lights (iTunes session)”
“Santa Baby (feat. Liz Gillies)” by Ariana Grande
For the past couple of weeks, Ariana Grande released different holiday singles! This week, she tackled the Eartha Kitt classic: “Santa Baby.” While the kazoo-like harmonies might be a little tacky, Ariana’s sultry and seductive voice would attract any guy instantly! Happy Holidays, Ariana! A-
“Cannonball” by Lea Michele
The Glee starlet is preparing to release her first solo studio album next year! Her first single, “Cannonball,” is a complete and utter delight to listen to! Kudos to Sia Furler, Benny Blanco and Stargate who helped Lea create this single. Hopefully, 2014 will be Lea’s year on top of the charts! A
“Later On” by the Swon Brothers
The Swon Brothers’ first post-Voice single: “Later On” is pure country. Both of them have improved so much since their time on the show. Their harmonies are both slicker and stronger and I love the instrumentation that was featured throughout the single! I cannot wait to hear your album next year. A-
