Welcome to the latest edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews. We got a lot of music to unpack, so let’s get this party started.
Pick Me Up off the Floor by Norah Jones
2020 is turning out to be a busy year for Norah Jones. First, the nine-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter released an album with her alternative country trio Puss N Boots. Now, she released her eighth studio album: Pick Me Off the Floor. The “Sunrise” singer-songwriter returned to her jazzy roots, and it is a hypnotic delight. This record is the perfect way to begin a massive twentieth anniversary celebration as NPR reported that Ms. Jones’ career would hit the 20-year mark in 2022. Norah Jones continues to set the standard for blending pop and jazz music, and Pick Me Up off the Floor is one of her personal best. A
Tracks to Download: “Say No More,” “This Life,” “To Life,” “I’m Alive,” & “Flame Twin.”
Pausa by Ricky Martin
Latin music superstar Ricky Martin is back with new music. Initially, the “She Bangs” singer-songwriter decided to release a studio album. However, he decided to split the collection into two extended plays. Pausa is the first extended play and features a plethora of Pop Latino and Latin trap artists. Fans would be excited to hear the former Voice Australia coach perform with Sting on the highlight of the EP, “Simple.” I am looking forward to hearing more music from the “Vida” performer later on this year. “Burn” by AJ Mitchell
Jake’s Take friend AJ Mitchell just released a new single: “Burn.” While the song is under two minutes and 30 seconds, “Burn” perfectly tugs at listeners’ heartstrings. This song is truly an epic piece of ear candy. A
“Power” by Ellie Goulding
It is hard to believe that we have not heard a full-length studio album from Ellie Goulding since 2015. On July 17, the “Anything Could Happen” singer-songwriter will drop her fourth studio album: Brightest Blue. Ms. Goulding told Pressparty that “Power” focused on relationships in this era and how social media and other negative attachments could dictate them. Co-written by Digital Farm Animals, Lucy Taylor, Jack Tarrant, and David Paich, “Power” has sturdy lyrics that we have been missing in the current EDM pop world. Also, producers Jonny Coffer and Jamie Scott brilliantly produced this irresistible piece of ear candy. B+
“Wait for You” by Tom Walker
One of my favorite UK singer-songwriters is back! Tom Walker released his latest single: “Wait for You.” When I first heard the first few notes, I immediately smiled. Whether it was his collaboration with Rudimental-“Walk Alone” or “Leave a Light On,” Tom Walker reassures listeners that everything will be alright. “Wait for You” is another home run for Tom and I cannot wait to hear the rest of the album! A+
