The Sing-Off winners treated hundreds of fans to an incredible show at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City.
The quintet put on an amazing hour-and-15 minute set that showcased the group at its finest.
They opened the show with their mash-up of two of Swedish House Mafia’s biggest hits: “Save the World” and “Don’t You Worry Child.” After that, the group immediately jumped into their latest cover: Macklemore and Ryan Morris’s “Thrift Shop” and pleased fans with some of their Sing-Off hits “Video Killed the Radio Star” and “ OMG.”
Throughout the show, the group members opened up about the origin of the group, the additions of Avi and Kevin and their upcoming album. They also talked about their time on the cancelled NBC show (#savethesingoff) and how their fans changed their lives. One story that they performed their audition song: Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone,” which showed off the vocal chemistry between all five members.
While Kirstie, Scott, Mitch and Avi took a break, Kevin showed off his cello-boxing skills as he performed an astonishing solo that had nearly all of the fans in the Midland filming the segment on their phones. The group reunited on stage to perform their take on Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” which one of the best moments of the night.
Another highlight of the evening was when Avi and Kevin divided the audience into three groups to perform a song with them. After the duo taught the groups their respective vocal patterns, they added their own beats to create a beautiful melody that gave their audience goose bumps.
Pentatonix finished their second act with their sensual covers of Rihanna’s “You Da One” and their signature take on Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On,” where the group sang to lucky audience member Whitney Campbell, who clearly enjoyed that performance.
Before the group called it a night, they performed Avi’s original and haunting song: “Peaceful World,” covered Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” and ended the evening with fun’s “We Are Young.”
Final thoughts and grade: Pentatonix put on an incredible show that should not be missed and I strongly believe that this group will be instrumental in integrating a cappella vocal groups into mainstream music. A
