The Five Question Challenge with Singer-Songwriter Rence

It is a privilege to welcome singer-songwriter Rence to Jake’s Take.

Over the past few months, Rence has developed a following on social media thanks to his presence on Billboard and Ones to Watch. The Epic Records artist has gathered hits such as “Baby Blue,” “blaring through the night,” “Darkside,” and “Expensive,” a collaboration with Noah Cyrus. Each of these songs blend various musical genres.

In this edition of The Five Question Challenge, Rence opened up about his latest EP, Fall 2019, and revealed his dream collaborators.

Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music? How did that passion evolve into the desire to pursue a career in the recording industry?

Rence: I have been singing at the top of my lungs ever since I could talk. Ever since I started listening to music, I noticed that I never forget song lyrics – anyone’s. If I connect with a song,  I pick up the lyrics within one to two listens and it never leaves my brain (like literally, I can still sing every word of the music I listened to when I was 12-years-old, and my memory is not very good in general). I fell in love with music, hard and early. To get my hands into it I asked my mom if I could play the violin when I was 5-years-old. From there I bounced around instruments until being introduced to sound design and production at school in Seattle (at a relatively young age I might add, big shout-out to my music teachers Michael Gettel and Jill Wangsgard). 

Jacob Elyachar: One of the attributes that make you stand out in the music industry is your innate ability to blend genres. In your humble opinion, will we ever see a genreless music industry?

Rence: Thank you for saying that! I do not think we will ever see a genreless industry, because classifications help us organize and keep track of things (especially as more music is created and released than ever before). But I do think we will see genres change more and more, morph and adjust to the music that is being created.

Jacob Elyachar: Let’s talk about your EP, Fall 2019. What can my readers expect from the record?

Rence: They can except a brutally honest me, just trying to make the best music I can honestly and authentically. Trying to take moments from my life (pain, happiness and all that’s in between) and put it to page so that listeners might be able to do the same.

Jacob Elyachar: Who are your dream collaborators (singers, songwriters, and producers)? How would they enhance your sound?  

Rence: T-Pain, Post Malone, Rosalía, Djo, Doja Cat, Col3trane, Young Thug, just to name a few. They would all enhance my sound – but in truth, one way or another, so does every single person I work with every day.

Jacob Elyachar: If you had the opportunity to meet with aspiring performers who want to advance their careers in the music industry, what advice would you share with them?

Rence: My advice is this: First, spend some serious time working on your craft so you know your product is undeniable. Then, that variable is gone. From there, believe in what you are doing 110-percent, or change what you are doing so that you do. Then, ooze that self belief. It is contagious and will take you wherever you want to go. Good music wins. Period.
