The Chrome Cats are the first artists to take the 5 Question Challenge this year!
Vallejo, California brother and sister duo KJ and Jamila Sims are rising stars in the Hip-Hop/Rap world.
After earning a spot on the Billboard Indicator charts with their single “DNA of a Winner” in 2010, both KJ and Jamila continue to hone their craft and produced “Best Life,” their second Billboard worthy single in the Top 40.
For this edition of the 5 Question Challenge, the Chrome Cats talked about the challenges that they face in the crowded music industry and how are they going to accomplish their goals for 2014!
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music?
Chrome Cats: We got interested in recording music around 2006, when our mom suggested we try it out. Before writing our first song, we had always been fond of listening to music around the house when we were younger. We attended dance lessons for a couple of years and that helped us learn more about music as well.
JE: Could you please describe your songwriting process to my readers?
CC: Normally, we will listen to an instrumental and a chorus idea will come to our head and we’ll start writing it out. Lately, we have been starting to have melody ideas and then, we would turn the melody into lyrics. The built-in voice note recorder on our phones really help us out a lot with recording song ideas. We also write all of our lyrics on our phones too.
JE: What are some of the challenges you face in the crowed music industry? How do you overcome them?
CC: A challenge that we face in the music industry is that we do not really have a road map duo to look up to. There are not too many boy/girl – sibling hip-hop duos in the industry right now that we can observe or study. Although it is a challenge, it is also an advantage because the lane is open.
JE: You recently released your latest single: “Best Life.” What was the inspiration behind the song?
CC: “Best Life” was inspired when we got in the studio with (three-time Billboard charting producer) Floyd Thomas and aimed to make a record that people can celebrate too. It is a track that you can play at a party or you can just lay back and listen to. It’s all about having fun and spreading positive vibes.
JE: What are some of your goals for 2014? How do you plan to accomplish them?
CC: While we’re still working on completing the full goal list, here are a few of them:
1. Create a new project / produce some beats on it
2. Go on Tour
3. Direct/ Co-Direct one of our music videos.
4. Work with Kanye, will.i.am and Pharrell
5. Record a song in Bora Bora
We plan to accomplish these goals by learning daily, networking with new people and expanding with a positive outlook.
