Singer-songwriter Tony Lucca is the latest artist to take The 5 Question Challenge!
For 20 years, Mr. Lucca has entertained audiences throughout various media platforms including the 1990s revival of the Mickey Mouse Club, but most importantly his music, which includes seven studio albums and two collaborations with Matt Duke and Jay Nash as TFDI.
Mr. Lucca caught the attention of all four Voice coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Christina Aguilera during his stunning cover of Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble” when he auditioned for the hit NBC show last year during its sophomore season.
After taking third place, Mr. Lucca signed with coach (and Maroon 5 front man) Adam Levine’s 222 Records and will be releasing his first EP: With the Whole World Watching this Tuesday.
Besides going to multiple cities including Chicago, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and Orlando on his late July to August tour to support this EP, Mr. Lucca will reunite for eight days with his mentor as he opens for Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson on the 2013 Honda Civic Tour.
But before he hits the road, Mr. Lucca corresponded with Examiner.com and talked about the recording process of his new EP, his songwriting process and the 2013 Honda Civic Tour.
Jacob Elyachar: How has your career changed since your time on “The Voice”?
Tony Lucca: Things have been rather busy. They have been good busy though. To say it’s had the desired effect is putting it lightly. Not only did it (my time on The Voice) brighten up the spotlight, but it also served as a motivational force in getting me to reexamine my approach to my career, creatively.
JE: You will be releasing your first post-“Voice” EP: “With the Whole World Watching” on July 16. What were some of the challenges that you faced with creating this EP? How did you overcome them?
TL: As an indie guy, I have always just made whatever kind of record I was in the mood to make. Whereas with this release, I knew it was going to have to be a bit bigger and have a more mainstream sound. Fortunately, I was ready for that challenge. We had a lot of fun finding the most creative way into a more modern song format. I’m really proud of this record. My kids dig it so that’s must say something.
JE: What goes through your mind while you are in your songwriting process?
TL: Organized chaos. It is like putting all of your thoughts, memories, ideas, recollections, notions, lessons and pictures on a picnic blanket and then throwing them up into the air and trying to grab the ones that go best together before they hit the ground.
JE: You will be joining forces with Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson for eight days as part of the 2013 Honda Civic Tour. How will this tour be different from any other tour experience that you had?
TL: Bigger stages and bigger crowds for sure. At the same time, there will probably be a bit more scrutiny and criticism. I suppose that just comes with the territory of being an opener. I welcome it though. I am ready for whatever is in store. Hopefully, I am able to stay present and take it all in. I imagine it will fly right by if we are not careful.
JE: If you had the chance to meet with aspiring musicians who want to work in the entertainment industry, what advice would you share with them?
TL: Believe in what you do and trust your instincts. At the same time, don’t shy away from criticism and accountability. Find people you can trust to give it to you straight. Make strong choices and have fun!
