It is a privilege to welcome singer-songwriter Grayce to Jake’s Take.
Originally from Hong Kong and later Japan, Grayce moved to the United States four years ago to chase her dream of becoming a performer. Since her move to Los Angeles, she has performed in iconic venues such as the Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go and the House of Blues.
In addition, she also had the privilege of performing alongside music icons Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder.
Grayce talked about that opportunity and her latest EP, The Golden Girl, in the latest edition of The Five Question Challenge.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music? How did that passion evolve into the desire of having a career in the industry?
Grayce: I first got introduced to music while growing up in Japan. There were tons of Karaoke Bars and my dad would always sing Frank Sinatra. Seeing the joy he had and the joy it brought to others encouraged me to give it a shot!
JE: You had the thrill of a lifetime when you performed amongst the likes of Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder? How did that opportunity help you grow as an artist?
G: That was such a dream! That opportunity helped me grow as an artist because it inspired me to see all these people coming together for something greater than themselves. It also helped me grow because I was working with a ton of new people who gave me advice and helped me become even more motivated to pursue my dreams.
JE: Could you please share your songwriting process with my readers?
G: I write with my best friend, Natania Lalwani. She is also an artist and when we write together it’s a mix of lots of tea, laughter, tears and magic! We begin with discussing what we want the message to be and how we want to illustrate it. When it comes to the story, we are telling it is always something that has happened to us in one way or another. The hope is that when we write someone out there says, “hey! I know how that feels!” From there it’s all about feeling the song, which pushes us to write new melodies and sometimes go in a completely different direction.
JE: Let’s talk about your EP: ‘The Golden Girl.” What were some of the challenges that you faced while you recorded the EP? How did you overcome them?
G: I suppose the biggest challenge was putting together songs that would introduce me as an artist. It sounds easier than it actually is! I wanted to make sure that every song, every message and every lyric was cohesive. Choosing only three songs to be on the EP was a lot of pressure, but I can only hope it shows what kind of artist I am.
JE: How has social media helped you start your career?
G: It has helped me so much. Social media has been my way of letting my fans know what is going on in my life but the truth is social media is more than just that, it is a way for me to connect with my fans. Seeing their excitement about my music pushes me to release more, play out more and find more opportunities to meet all of them in person!
