Tonight is the last night of NBC’s I Can Do That!
For the past couple of weeks, six celebrities were challenged to go outside of their comfort zone and perform with outstanding entertainment acts such as the Harlem Globetrotters, the Blue Man Group, Jabbawockeez and the cast of Avenue Q. Since I Can Do That’s premiere, there has been one celebrity that has constantly entertained me every week. That celebrity is….comedian Jeff Dye.
Since his appearance on the sixth season of Last Comic Standing, Jeff headlined two Comedy Channel specials; assisted Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team on creating a dream home for the McPhail Family; hosted multiple MTV shows such as New Years Countdown-Live From Times Square, Money from Strangers, Girl Code and his own special: Numbnuts and was selected to perform at the 2014 Cabo Comedy Festival.
Before he hits the I Can Do That stage with Joe Jonas to show off his rapping skills alongside their mentor of the week, Snoop Dogg, Jeff took The Five Question Challenge! In this edition, Jeff shared his favorite highlights from I Can Do That and opened up about the challenges that he faced throughout his career.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in comedy? How did that passion turn into the desire of having a career in the entertainment industry?
Jeff Dye: I have loved jokes and comedy since I started school. I was always the class clown and a glutton for positive attention. When I got out of high school, I knew not many colleges took D students and that there is not a degree required to become a comedian. So right out of high school, I chased my first love at the closest comedy club I could find.
JE: Tonight is the final episode of NBC’s variety series: “I Can Do That.” What were some of your headlines from your time on the show? How did the series help you grow as an entertainer?
JD: I think the obvious answer here is either working with the Harlem Globetrotters or the Pilobolus Dance Company. But, in honesty, my favorite part was becoming friends with the cast and crew. This show, on and off-camera, has such a great group of people. It was fun coming to work everyday and hang out with the producers, camera guys, choreographers et cetera.
JE: On July 18, you will be returning to host the sophomore season of MTV’s “Money From Strangers.” What memorable pranks can fans expect from this season?
JD: Actually, I have not heard about this. I am not sure where people keep getting that information. MTV has not reached out to me since they stopped using me on Girl Code over a year ago.
JE: What have been some of the challenges that you have faced in your career? How have you overcome them?
JD: I think the biggest challenge has been juggling my personal life and my career. I would also say I did not do a very good job of it, as I compromised many relationships and missed a lot of weddings. However, I have always been my dreams first and that’s what they mean when they say dare to dream.
JE: If you had the chance to meet with aspiring comedians who want to work in the entertainment industry, what advice would you share with them?
JD: I think my best advice would be to just work really hard at it and realize that if you do not love it, it will not happen.
