It is an honor to welcome rocker Kat Robichaud to Jake’s Take!
Viewers fell in love with her when she first appeared on The Voice: Season Five as a member of Team CeeLo. Her powerful raw vocal performances such as “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” “You Oughta Know” and “She Keeps Me Warm” stole the show multiple times throughout the season.
After finishing in the Top 10 last season, Kat launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her upcoming solo rock album!
In this edition of The Five Question Challenge, Kat talked about her time on The Voice and how it helped her prepare for the next chapter in her career.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you first become interested in having a career in music?
Kat Robichaud: I always loved to sing growing up. I graduated from the College of Design at NC State. During my senior year, I joined a band for fun and it turned into a career. We were together for eight years before breaking up, and at that time I decided to try out for The Voice.
JE: What were some of the challenges that you faced on “The Voice”? How did you overcome them?
KR: Although the show itself was incredibly supportive of who I was, I fell victim to the Internet trolls and it made my second guess myself. My last performance of “We Belong” was basically me saying, this is who I am, no apologies, if I’m going out tonight, I’m performing the way I want to perform. It felt amazing and The Voice backed me 100-percent.
JE: What were your favorite performances on “The Voice?” What made them stand out to you?
KR: My favorite performance on The Voice was “Sail.” It was just so “me”. I love to rock out. I love to crowd surf. I love to wear sparkly shorts. The message of the song was powerful as well, and I think it speaks to a lot of people who feel like they can never fit it. It was fun a fun performance and I loved every second of it.
JE: How did your time on the show help you prepare for the next journey in your music career?
KR: I had been performing like that (albeit in a smaller capacity, i.e. no backup dancers) for years. It is lovely to have that BIG PRODUCTION experience and to have experience conducting yourself on live television. I learned what to do and what not to do. I also learned how to talk to people I have never met before online. I learned how to reach out to people via the Internet.
JE: If you had the chance to meet with aspiring artists who want to work in the music industry, what advice would you share with them?
KR: Be yourself! Always be yourself! It can get stressful, but remember you’re doing this because you love it. Remember to be happy. It’s hard to do sometimes in the moment. But be happy that you have the ability to perform and you have the ability to make others happy, which sometimes is way better than making yourself happy.
