It is a pleasure to introduce you to Lyke Giants!

Based out of Tasmania, Australia, James Brewer, Cal and Luke Thomson are an Indie rock trio that has not only captured the attention of not only their homeland, but also fans from across the globe.

Since releasing their debut record, Fires Thieving Time, the band supported bands such as British India and Faker, plus performed at the Falls Festival.

In this edition of The Five Question Challenge, the guys talked about their latest single: “Let Up” and their opinion of social media.

Jacob Elyachar: Could you please share Lyke Giants’ origin story with my readers?

James Brewer: Luke and Cal have been brothers their whole life. They started playing instruments at the same time and would always jam together. One day they decided to look for other players and put their feelers out. Eventually, they decided to join another band that recently had their bassist and drummer quit. We became a four piece and I was the lead guitarist. After a few years, the lead singer quit and we decided to become a trio. I stood up to become the lead singer and Luke and Cal stayed where they were because they knew their place!

JE: How does the group’s songwriting process differ from other Indie Rock groups on the market?

Cal Thomas: The way we write can differ from song to song but for all of them the music comes first and lyrics last. We usually record the jams and often after a night, we would sometimes walk away with three rough song ideas and melodies. Song structures come together fairly easy this way because we have learned to listen to each other. After that, we edit these songs into good lengths and refine sections. The second way we write is one of us records a rough song structure or an idea and then we will separately record over the top of the track. Lyrics are often a contribution of all three of us and otherwise James writes them.

JE: What were some of the challenges that the group faced while recording your single: “Let Up”? How did you overcome them?

Luke Thomson: We did not have too many big challenges when recording or writing. Our producer, Paul McKercher, always gave us great feedback that we are more than happy to implement. It is really important to us to be able to bounce ideas of someone that we trust who is not a member of the band. I say this because often feedback from a producer can be hard to swallow, but in our case we are very fortunate to work with someone like Paul.

JE: Social media is a crucial role to multiple artists in today’s music industry. How does Lyke Giants view social media and how are you incorporating it into your marketing strategy?

JB: From the beginning we have recognized the impact that social media has and have worked hard at growing our online presence. We find a lot of the music we listen to personally on music blogs from around the world. It is one of the best ways to find fresh tunes that we can’t hear locally. So, we appreciate the important role that blogs play in what we do and who we are influenced by.

JE: What can your fans expect from the band for the rest of the year?

CT: Since releasing our debut album, we have been busy writing new material. This has given us a good number of demos under our belt that we plan to release throughout the year. We have no set release dates for these songs, as we do not want to be limited by a time frame. We do not want to rush them and we feel that the more time we put in, the better the songs will be.
