Earlier this year, I crossed paths with Toronto-based DJ Scotty Dynamo when he headlined Kansas City Fashion Week’s Runway on the Rooftop-Runway Show and Cocktail Party in September. I was extremely impressed with his smooth beats, outgoing personality and his natural ability to perfectly match the music with the mood of the evening!
Since he made his debut in 2008, the Canadian DJ’s high octane music videos including the catchy “Show Me Yours” have over 4,314,289 views on YouTube and helped him gained him a large social media following. With over 10,000 Facebook fans, 18,000 Instagram followers, 18,300 Twitter followers and 38,000 YouTube subscribers, Scotty continues to gain new fans constantly thanks to his gigs at numerous music festivals such as Canadian Music Week, North by Northeast and MANIFESTO.
In this edition of The Five Question Challenge, Scotty opened up about one challenge that he constantly faces on the job and how social media continues to help grow his presence on the World Wide Web.
Jacob Elyachar: When did you get interested in music? How did that passion evolve into the desire of becoming a DJ?
Scotty Dynamo: I have always been obsessed with music! As a kid, I was always writing songs, performing in some sort of school play, and forcing my parents to watch me perform new stuff in their living room. Thankfully, they were pretty patient and encouraging. Eventually, I started uploading my own stuff on the Internet and people started booking me to come perform in different cities.
JE: What goes through your mind when you create your set?
SD: It really depends on the type of event I am performing at and the type of crowd that will be there. I try to do a bit of research and ask the right questions so that I have a bit of a game plan going into the party. At the end of the day, it is all about making sure everyone has a great time. I will play and do whatever it takes to make that happen!
JE: What are some of the challenges that you faced throughout your career? How did you overcome them?
SD: This might be TMI, but I have a pretty small bladder. DJ sets can be three-to=four hours long! It can get pretty rough up there. (Laughs)
JE: How has social media helped your presence grow on the World Wide Web?
SD: Social Media has helped me reach and connect with people around the world who otherwise might have never found out about me. It is kind of surreal sometimes…uploading a song or video and waking up the next day with thousands of views from people in countries I have never visited. It makes the promotional side of things a lot easier. You do not need to rely on a label or middleman to do these things for you.
JE: If you had the chance to meet with aspiring DJs who want to have a career in the music industry, what advice would you share with them?
SD: When I was growing up, I had a ton of teachers and people tell me that DJing was not a real profession and that people could never make a living off of it. I am now making more than all of those people as a DJ. Do not let people with small minds talk you out of big dreams. If you have a vision, believe in it, never mind the people who might not understand it right now, and work your hardest to make it happen.
