5. If I Ain’t Got You/Higher Ground (2004)

In 2004, Stevie Wonder teamed up with rising R&B superstar Alicia Keys and Rock legend Lenny Kravitz to deliver an incredible performance of Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” and Wonder’s classic “Higher Ground” at the MTV Video Music Awards.   Viewers will find that Keys and Wonder playing on keyboards side-by-side and Kravitz providing funk rock into the song.   This performance remains one of MTV Video Music Awards viewers’ favorite performances of the 2000s shows.

4. Happy Birthday (1996)

For the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, Stevie Wonder joined forces with an all-star group of musicians including the Late Show’s Paul Shaffer, B.B. King, Gloria Estefan and the Pointer Sisters to perform a rousing “Happy Birthday” for the Olympics as the sporting event celebrated its’ 100th Olympic Games.   This performance showed how Wonder can organize a group of some of the best in the music business and deliver a terrific group performance embraced by both the 1996 Olympians and the audience.

3. Signed, Sealed and Delivered…I’m Yours (2009)

13 years later, Wonder brought another group of artists together to cover his 1970s classic “Signed, Sealed and Delivered” to sing at President Obama’s Neighborhood Ball.  His partners in this performance included Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Sting, Faith Hill and more.   Wonder let every artist had their moment in the spotlight and deliver a terrific performance that had President and First Lady Obama and the audience moving in joy.

2. Until You Come Back to Me (2005)

The final two performances are what I consider vocal master classes.  Wonder performed with the Top Two of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.  However, while the Queen of Soul made the top of their list, her collaboration with Wonder came in second.  In 2005, Aretha and Stevie performed “Until You Come Back to Meat the “Lady of Soul” show.   This performance is considered a vocal master class as Franklin belts out her hit while Wonder performs backup for the Queen of Soul.

1. Living in the City (Year unknown)

What happens when you put two R&B geniuses in the same room? You get a master class performance? But what happens when the performers are Stevie Wonder and the late Ray Charles?  The two-part answer is you get an incredible performance and the number one collaboration in this countdown.    From superb vocals to a backing orchestra and a union of each Grammy-winning artist’s backup singers, you get a performance viewers will never forget.
