Epic Records recording artist Tom Walker visited New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on August 5. The United Kingdom-based singer-songwriter is having a breakout year.
He released his debut album: What A Time To Be Alive. The album peaked in the Top 20 on six different countries’ music charts. Tom Walker was also awarded the BRIT Awards’ British Breakthrough Act and was spotlighted on Billboard’s website. Also, he released impeccable collaborations with Rudimental (“Walk Alone”) and Zara Larsson (“Now You’re Gone”).
Craig Stickland Takes The Stage
Singer-songwriter Craig Stickland warmed up the crowd before Tom Walker performed. The Indie rock performer hails from Toronto but calls Los Angeles home when he is not on tour. Craig is building momentum on social media with his tunes such as “Burn It Down,” “Stop at Nothing,” and “Keep Me in Your Mind.”
When I first saw Craig Stickland on stage, it reminded me the first time I saw Dave Grohl in his Nirvana glory days. However, Craig’s voice reminded me of a hybrid of Bo Bice and Lenny Kravitz. Craig mentioned to the audience that every time he performed in the Big Apple it is a “surreal experience.” Craig showcased his artistry during his short set. A significant highlight of his set was when he sang “Break Every Rule.” This song has Top 40 potential and his “primal scream” note near the track’s decrescendo made me a fan. Hopefully, we can predict that one day Craig Stickland will dominate the rock charts.
Enter Tom Walker
After switching out instruments and set pieces, two giant spotlights blinded the Bowery Ballroom audience as Tom Walker made his entrance. Immediately, the Bowery Ballroom’s energy amplified as Tom’s passion and charisma oozed from the stage. Tom hit the ground running with the electrifying “Angels” and did not disappoint his fans.
Probably two of the best sing-along moments of the evening came from when Tom Walker sang “Walk Alone” and “Blessings.” “Walk Alone,” Tom’s collaboration with fellow English rock group Rudimental, was an empowering moment that could almost be akin to a religious or spiritual experience. Meanwhile, concertgoers picked up their smartphones as the “Cry Out” singer-songwriter encouraged them to sing.
In addition to being a fantastic virtuoso, Tom Walker told incredible stories. Some of the highlights included how AC/DC inspired him to become a singer and his frustration with the news networks (“Dominoes”). Before he sang “Just You and I,” he happily revealed that he and his longtime girlfriend of six years were engaged.
Final thoughts and grade: Tom Walker showcased why he is 2019’s breakout acts and after witnessing his concert, I truly believe that he is just getting started as he builds his career in the recording industry. A
