Artists to Watch
Jake’s Take’s Artists to Watch is back! Here are some of the recording artists that you need to keep your eyes on.
The Dream: Living The Dream (Deluxe Edition) by Hailey Whitters
If there is one country music artist that you need to keep your eye on is, it is singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters. When I listened to the deluxe edition of The Dream: Living the Dream, I felt like I was listening to an authentic storyteller who weaved her journey to get into country music into one spectacular album. Hailey’s lyrics are some of the best songs that I have heard in country music in a while. Hailey and her team also included several collaborations from country music heavyweights such as Little Big Town (“Fillin’ My Cups”) and Trisha Yearwood (“How Far Can I Go?”). I believe that The Dream: Living the Dream is just the beginning of Hailey Whitters’ monumental career in country music. A-
Tracks to Download: “Ten Year Town,” “The Days,” “Heartland,” “Fillin’ My Cup,” & “How Far Can It Go?”
Daytona Bleach by MONOWHALES
From the first note of “All or Nothing,” I shouted: “Why have I have not heard of MONOWHALES before?” The Toronto-based trio (singer Sally Shaar, guitarist Zach Zanardo, and drummer Jordan Circosta) have rejuvenated the pop rock music genre! I was very impressed with their overall sound and their superb lyrics. The best way to describe MONOWHALES’ sound is that it perfectly blends 5 Seconds of Summer’s Sounds Good Feels Good’s energy with the Struts’ explosive guitar licks. Daytona Bleach is one record that I am going to remember for a long time! A
Tracks to Download: “All or Nothing,” “He Said/She Said (I Wait),” “BL/FF (Fake Friends),” “Out with the Old,” & “Over My Head.
“Dimension” by JAE5 featuring Skepta & Rema
UK-based producer JAE5 has worked with many international music stars, including Anne Marie, French Montana, Jess Glynne, Mark Ronson, and Sam Smith. Now, the producer is stepping into the spotlight. Featuring British rapper Skepta and Nigerian Afro-trap Rema, “Dimension” is a hypnotic track that features a killer chorus and superb hooks. I am looking forward to hearing more music from JAE5. A-
“Honey Trap” by Kandle
British Columbia-born singer-songwriter Kandle Osborne has one hypnotic voice. Her latest single: “Honey Trap” reminds me of a combination of James Bond theme song and a No Doubt/Gwen Stefani B-side track. Kandle’s “Honey Trap” is a seductive piece of ear candy and should be heard on various streaming platforms. B+
“50/50” by Kayla Diamond
Kayla Diamond’s “50/50” turns the table on love songs. Instead of being a story of jilted ex-lovers, “50/50” focuses on the listeners. Kayla’s vocals remind me of a combination of Demi Lovato and Jessie J. Just like the “Sorry Not Sorry” and “Domino” singer-songwriters, Kayla Diamond has the potential to succeed in the music industry and become a top pop artist. B+
“Shahumba” by Sho Madjozi featuring Dr. Thomas Chaulke
Rounding out this edition of Jake’s Take’s New Music Reviews is South Africa recording artist Sho Madjozi. She recently dropped the music video for “Shahumba,” a brilliant track that showcases the story of a young girl navigating life in her hometown and her powerful bond with her father. Joining her to tell this incredible story is South Africa music legend Dr. Thomas Chaulke. The track is beautiful from start to finish, and I hope that more people check out Sho’s fantastic music. A-
